"Learning to Live Together" Asia-Pacific Exhibition
Under UNESCO’s Intersectoral Platform on a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence, UNESCO Bangkok is leading a multi-country mapping exercise on how different countries in the Asia-Pacific region operationalize the concept of “learning to live together” through education.
The exercise focuses on ten countries in the region and is supported by contributions from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), amongst others.
Using the vision of the Delors Commission on Education for the 21st Century, especially in regard to the pillar of “learning to live together”, the mapping is examining the extent to which education systems in selected countries promote the processes of discovery of others and experiences of shared purposes via the teaching of illustrative competencies and skills such as communication, teamwork, political participation, media and information literacy, community involvement, concern for the environment, cultural sensitivity and understanding of discrimination. The synthesis and summary of the exercise will be available in late 2013.
As a complement to this exercise, UNESCO Bangkok initiated the “Learning to Live Together” image competition, inviting youth from the Asia-Pacific region to submit photos, images, drawings, paintings or any image that captures actions, ideas or initiatives that promote “learning to live together”. More than 200 submissions were received from 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
To feature the top submissions to the competition, a public exhibition will be held at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC) from 17 to 22 September 2013. The exhibition will be launched on 17 September 2013 with the announcement of the competition winners and the prize presentation ceremony.
Both the competition and the exhibition hope to create awareness about the need for students to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to cultivate a culture of peace and respect for diversity. An e-exhibition of the shortlisted entries is also planned.
