Activities General

Since 2006 UNESCO and its IOC utilize results-based management techniques for programming and evaluating its programmes and projects. The purpose is to shift managerial and administrative emphasis from a process-focused approach to one based on performance and results (outcomes).

In the case of IODE 4 main activities have been identified that will steer the IODE programme. These are:

  1. Globally accessible portal to distributed ocean data and information sources: development of technological framework and exchange standards
  2. Development and updating of national oceanographic data and information management capacity in Member States
  3. Global accessible clearing-house service for oceanographic factual and intellectual information
  4. Programme strategy, management, inter-agency liaison and outreach

These 4 activities will generate the following 6 results:

  1. Globally accessible portal to distributed ocean data and information sources
  2. Publication, dissemination and adoption by MS of a set of standards and best practices providing a complete framework for the exchange and dissemination of oceanographic data and information
  3. Development, dissemination and use by target audiences of an oceanographic data and information management training system (OceanTeacher)
  4. Development and updating of national oceanographic data and information management capacity in Member States
  5. Globally accessible clearing-house service for oceanographic factual and intellectual information (directories, portals, publications,…);
  6. Global awareness about oceanographic data and information management amongst target audiences

Translated into programme activities we can reflect the above activities in the following activity matrix:
