IODE 50th anniversary international conference

iode50logo_150_1The IODE 50th Anniversary International Conference was held in Liège, Belgium, 21-22 March 2011. The 2-day event, held at the University of Liège's beautiful auditorium, welcomed nearly 100 participants.

The objective of the Conference was to look back on the achievements of the IODE data and information centres, to review the progress made by the IODE capacity building programme, and to consider emerging needs, opportunities and challenges.

After words of welcome by Dr G. Pichot (Head of MUMM) and Mr Greg Reed (IODE Co-Chair) the Conference was addressed by Dr Wendy Watson-Wright (video available here) and Prof. Jean-Pascal van Ypersele de Strihou (Vice-Chairman of the IPCC) (video available here). This was followed by a histpric overview of IODE presented by Dr Iouri Oliounine (video available here)

The conference was divided in 4 sessions, followed by a roundtable discussion to summarize the highlights. All presentations were video recorded and can be viewed online. Click on the paper's title to obtain more information.iode50_group_250

These highlights included the demonstrated strong IODE programme in capacity building (ODINs, OceanTeacher); the important progress with the development of the IODE OceanDataPortal, witnessed by the rapid increase in data providers; the important achievements of the IODE's marine information management programme which has attracted attention and collaboration by many libraries as well as other international organizations; and the important emerging opportunities such as the new Published Ocean Data (POD) initiative, the adoption of OBIS into IODE, and the potential in cooperation with and contribution to Marine Spatial Planning as well as the European EMODNET.
