Post Doctoral Positions at the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO)

The Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) is a new Center of Excellence devoted to fundamental oceanographic research in the South Pacific.

 

At least two full-time postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) to undertake innovative research and to develop questions in any of these research lines and in association with two, or more, of IMO’s Associate Researchers. Monaco Blue Initiative

IOC ADG Wendy Watson-Wright addressed the 2nd edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative, 14th Feb. 2011. Nine years ago the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development pledged to establish Marine Protected Areas covering 10 per cent of the world's oceans by 2012. That deadline has now been pushed back to 2020. So far only an estimated 1.17 per cent of the world's oceans are protected, with just a fraction of those designated as "no-take" zones.

IOC cooperates with the first Advisory Opinion of ITLOS

IOC weighed in on the questions of the transfer of marine technology and conduct of marine science research to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). In interpreting criteria and guidelines on Marine Scientific Research and Transfer of Marine Technology, the IOC advocated a precautionary approach, recognizing the importance of technology transfer, ocean preservation and the common heritage of mankind as the overall principles governing activities in the Area.

Tsunami and Earthquake of 11 March 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku, Japan

In the days following the devastating M8.9 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, 11 March 2011, a grim picture is emerging of the dTsunamiTravelTimes300eath and destruction wreaked by the tsunami and once again the world is reminded of the deadly force of the ocean. The scenes transmitted around the world have shocked us all, and the IOC sends it condolences to the people of Japan and pledges to continue its efforts to coordinate the implementation and improvement of tsunami warning systems globally.

Urban Ocean Observatories

Stevens professor Alan Blumberg to give invited talk to UNESCO/IOC
Dr. Alan Blumberg, Director of the Center for Maritime Systems (CMS) at Stevens Institute of Technology, has been invited to deliver a talk on urban maritime awareness to UNESCO stakeholders in Paris on April 12. His talk, "An Urban Ocean Observatory: Marine Observing and Forecasting in New York/New Jersey Waters," will address his experiences developing and managing maritime observation systems in the busy New York Harbor.
