About Marine Information Management

Marine Information Management: helping to understand and protect the marine environment

Marine Science Information Centres and Libraries hold an important role in promoting information about the marine environment: information provision to the policy makers and researchers - educating the next generation of environmental stewards; attracting a future environmentally concerned workforce and generating an ocean literate public that understands the value of the ocean and can make appropriate decisions to protect it.

Marine Information Managers (MIM) are collecting, organising, and exploiting information, data, expertise and other knowledge assets which are held within their organisations, ensuring that these assets remain available for future use. On an international scale, networks of MIM Centres are collaborating to produce products and services to strengthen our global understanding of ocean processes and conditions. Marine Information Management is a vital process in the ocean knowledge cycle.

Our Users and Partners

The users of marine information include research scientists, policy makers, and students at all levels, educators, industry and businesses. Marine Information Managers interact with Marine Data Managers to deliver information products in a variety of online media formats. The data may be re-packaged in the form of websites, regional repositories of stored and accessible scientific research (publications, images, data etc. online catalogues of specialized collections; digitized collections of difficult to find scientific studies; electronic citation databases and internet bibliographies. We establish national and international standards to disseminate this information, and we form groups of networked individuals and professional societies to collaborate on new products, on training courses and technology for the delivery of marine and atmospheric information.

 Guiding Principles

  1.   Marine Information is a common resource, indispensable for understanding the ocean and for the wise exploitation and management of its resources.
  2. Marine Information is a prerequisite to the development of national and regional infrastructures, and contributes to the transfer of knowledge and technology between developing and developed countries.
  3. International marine information systems exist to interact and cooperate within a network of information centres each of which is self-sufficient at the national level.
  4. Management of a cooperative network, based on the concept of confederation, is coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission/International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) within the United Nations system, to ensure cohesion and coherency.
  5. Member States make a firm commitment to a national policy in marine information management, based on the framework, services, and products implemented by IODE/IAMSLIC Joint Group of Experts in Marine Information Management (GE-MIM)

Membership of GE-MIM includes Member States’ nominations (four) and (four) representatives from the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Libraries (IAMSLIC) and Invited Experts .

Also, within IODE, Member States nominate National Coordinators of Marine Information Management (NC MIM) See Terms of Reference:
Amongst other duties, the NC MIMS should provide reports to the IODE Committee (or IODE Officers), highlighting needs and issues that should be addressed by GE-MIM, for consideration by the IODE Committee or IODE Officers. The Committee or IODE Officers can then instruct the GE-MIM to deal with these needs and issues.

Communication strategy

This document outlines a framework for communication activities for 2015-2017 identifying new objectives while building on previous outcomes. It acknowledges the need to broaden the understanding of MIM by the wider IODE Data Management community and identifies mechanisms which will improve communication between IODE Officers and GE-MIM and with other relevant agencies in marine information management. The document can be downloaded from http://www.iode.org/mg71

Activities

The Marine Information Management Programme within IODE focuses on the implementation of regional Ocean Data and Information Centres. In particular, the provision of technical training for national centres that prepares marine information products. MIM promotes the training of Information Professionals from centres in developing countries and conducts courses and workshops for information professional and users of information, including courses on the application of marine information to meet specific types of user needs. The Oceanographic Data and Information Network (ODINS) See ODINAFRICA, ODINECET, ODINWESTPAC, ODINCARSA . (Please See Link)

Projects fostered by MIM include online Marine Library catalog/repository development, digitization of literature, grant preparation, communication and outreach strategies, preparation of disaster plans, document preservation, and linked data. A collaborative approach with oceanographic data centres is emphasized.

A GE-MIM representative also holds a place on many IODE Project Steering Groups to offer information assistance. See IODE Project Groups

Additionally, GE-MIM has pioneered and supported IOC marine information products:

OceanExpert:

Ocean Expert (or the Global Directory of Marine (and Freshwater) Professionals) is a database, developed and maintained by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC), containing information on individuals and institutions involved in all aspects of Marine or Freshwater Research and Management. It is intended to be a tool for scientists, policy makers and anyone who needs to contact a marine or freshwater
professional. Ocean Expert currently contains 8655 experts and 4847 institutions with regular calls for new and updated records.

OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA):

OceanTeacherGA is comprehensive web-based training system that supports Classroom training (face-to-face), Blended training (combining classroom and distance learning), online tutoring and online self-learning. OceanTeacherGA has been developed as a training system for ocean data managers (working in ocean data centres), marine information managers (marine librarians) as well as for marine researchers who wish to acquire knowledge on data and/or information management. In addition OceanTeacherGA is being used for training in other related disciplines.
The objective of OTGA is to provide training tools for Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange. These tools are used during IODE Training Courses but can also be used for self-training and continuous professional development.

OceanDocs:

Electronic repository of Ocean Research & Publications in Marine Science in digital form, including preprints, published articles, technical reports, working papers and more.

OceanDataPractices:

A clearinghouse repository for data and information management best practices.

 OceanKnowledgePlatform (Pilot Project) 2015-2017 :

The OceanKowledge Platform will offer an IODE Discovery Service providing the user a single online access point to various IODE information and data products, and will facilitate social networking amongst research communities.

Regional Library Catalogues:

IODE Information managers have advised in the development of Regional Online Library Catalogues See individual ODIN group accomplishments such as AFRILIB. This is the combined library holding database of all marine partner libraries in Africa. This database currently holds over 38,445 records.

Discontinued:

OceanPortal

Ocean Portal is a high-level directory of Ocean Data and Information related web sites. Its objective is to help scientists and other ocean experts in locating such data & information.

Global Cooperative Activities:

ASFA Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts: Member of Board of Directors (1970- Present)

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) is an International Cooperative Information System which comprises an abstracting and indexing service covering the world's literature on the science, technology, management, and conservation of marine, brackish water, and freshwater resources and environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects.

IAMSLIC:

International Association of Marine and Aquatic Sciences Libraries and Information Centers
Joint MOU for collaborative activities (2013-2015)

AquaticCommons:

The Aquatic Commons is a thematic digital repository covering the natural marine, estuarine/brackish and fresh water environments. Since December 2010, IODE is hosting  and maintaining the web infrastructure behind AquaticCommons.
