On 6 and 7 June 2012, the Twenty-second Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea elected 20 members of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf for a term of five years, commencing from 16 June 2012 and ending on 15 June 2017. The election of 1 member of the Commission has been postponed. The list of members elect are available here.

On 4 December 2009, the General Assembly adopted, by 120 votes against 1 with 3 abstentions,  draft resolution A/64/L.18 and A/64/L.18/Corr.1 on "Oceans and the Law of the Sea" as resolution 64/71, and adopted, without a vote, draft resolution A/64/L.29 on "Sustainable fisheries, including through the 1995 Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks, and related instruments" as resolution 64/72. The resolutions are now available.

The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, has developed an interdisciplinary manual on “Developing and Implementing an Ecosystem Approach to the Management of Ocean-related Activities”, which focuses on the development and implementation of an ecosystem approach to the management of human activities and their impacts on the marine environment within a national context, while meeting regional and international obligations. The manual will form a basis for the delivery of a training workshop, organized by DOALOS in the context of the Train-Sea-Coast Programme, and in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners, to be held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 27 October to 1 November 2008. The objective of the workshop is to provide government officials and managers with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and implement an ecosystem approach to the management of ocean-related activities. Participants have been invited from the Contracting Parties to the Nairobi Convention (Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and United Republic of Tanzania).

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs are jointly conducting a briefing on developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea. The briefing, to be conducted in English, will be held at United Nations Headquarters on  Tuesday, 12 October 2004, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m., and on Wednesday and Thursday, 13 and 14 October, from 3 to 6 p.m. The briefing is intended for all delegates from Permanent Missions accredited to the United Nations in New York, in particular those interested in the field of oceans and the law of the sea.

A letter on this subject, including an information note, a tentative programme and a nomination form, was addressed to all the Permanent Missions. The registration deadline is Wednesday, 6 October.   This document embodies amendments and additions of these documents adopted by the Commission up to 30 April 2004. Annexes I and II of the Rules of Procedure were adopted by the Commission at its fourth session, held from 31 August to 4 September 1998. Annex III was adopted by the Commission at its thirteenth session, held from 26 to 30 April 2004, and replaced the Modus Operandi of the Commission (CLCS/L.3 – 12 September 1997) and the Internal procedure of the subcommission of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS/L.12 – 25 May 2002). Seventeenth Law of the Sea Fellowship Awarded: NEW YORK, 23 December (Office of Legal Affairs) -- The Legal Counsel of the United Nations has made two awards under the Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe Memorial Fellowship on the Law of the Sea. The regular seventeenth award was made to Maria Cristina Pereira of Cabo Verde and a second, funded by a special grant from the United Kingdom, was made to Javier Plata González of Colombia. The awards were made on the recommendation of the High-Level Advisory Panel composed of eminent persons in international relations and in the law of the sea and its implementation. (On 11 November 2001, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malta deposited an instrument of accession to the Agreement.
