The Division for Ocean Affairs and
the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations,
has developed an interdisciplinary manual on “Developing and Implementing an
Ecosystem Approach to the Management of Ocean-related Activities”, which
focuses on the development and implementation of an ecosystem approach to the
management of human activities and their impacts on the marine environment
within a national context, while meeting regional and international
obligations. The manual will form a basis for the delivery of a training
workshop, organized by DOALOS in the context of the Train-Sea-Coast Programme, and in collaboration
with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners, to be held
in Mombasa, Kenya, from 27 October to 1 November 2008. The objective of the
workshop is to provide government officials and managers with the necessary
knowledge and skills to develop and implement an ecosystem approach to the
management of ocean-related activities. Participants have been invited from
the Contracting Parties to the Nairobi Convention (Comoros, Kenya,
Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and
United Republic of Tanzania). |

Legal Counsel of the United Nations has made two awards under the Hamilton
Shirley Amerasinghe Memorial Fellowship on the Law
of the Sea. The regular seventeenth award was made to Maria Cristina Pereira
of Cabo Verde and a second, funded by a special grant from the United
Kingdom, was made to Javier Plata González of Colombia. The awards were made
on the recommendation of the High-Level Advisory Panel composed of eminent
