A regional project for women’s empowerment and gender mainstreaming for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in Asia and the Pacific has been initiated by the Beijing and Apia Offices. The activities planned are couched in the UNESCO’s priority “Gender Equality” and are responsive to its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals notably on gender equality (MDG3).
Strengthening the capacities of youth and young women for non-violence This project will develop an interactive toolkit which will be used to disseminate information on laws, regulations, services, and important messages, and so on, to the target population group so as to enhance their knowledge, awareness, practices and attitudes towards violence in
general, and specifi c forms of gender based violence that they are likely to encounter.
The UNESCO Apia Offi ce focuses on violence against women in the Pacifi c in order to create an active advocacy
network and policy tools to promote a culturally appropriate, balanced and human rights based view on "Gender” and “Culture” in the Pacifi c to create a Culture of Peace. Several cultural factors need to be addressed for the empowerment of women and violence against women in the Pacifi c. These factors include, among others, cultural norms and values, certain cultural practices, traditional justice systems, participation of women in decision making at all levels. By addressing cultural factors sometimes used as a justifi cation of gender-based violence, this project aims to empower women and promote a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in the Pacific in a culturally sensitive manner.

International Women's Day 2014: a celebration for gender equality.
Ha Noi, 7 March 2014 - A series of activities from 27 February to 9 March are organized by the UN in Vietnam, donors and national counterparts to celebrate International Women’s Day 2014. Since 1975, the UN has celebrated this day to empower women as a frontline for building a more peaceful and just world.
Under this year’s global theme “Equality for women is progress for all”, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, recalls ‘the United Nations and its agencies have promoted the equal participation of women and men in all efforts to promote sustainable development and lasting peace, on the basis of human rights and fundamental freedoms’.
On this day, UNESCO joins forces with international and regional partners to launch the annual Women Make the News (WMN) initiative. The theme this year is “Advancing Global Partnerships to Achieving Gender Equality in and through Media.” The WMN 2014 theme is connected to the success of the groundbreaking Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG) launched during the first Global Forum on Media and Gender which took place in Bangkok, Thailand on 2nd to 4th of December 2013. WMN is an annual global initiative aimed at raising awareness on the issue of gender equality in and through the media, to have more women representation in the media, more specialized contents on women and more women in editorial operation.
In Viet Nam, UNESCO has been supporting to assess, review, revise and implement, where appropriate, curricula and other educational materials, with a view to promoting the dissemination to both men and women, boys and girls, of gender-relevant knowledge and skills and an evaluation of women's roles through formal and non-formal education, as well as through training institutions, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations.
As part of the celebration, the interactive dialogue “Windows of Love Offline” on Gender Stereotypes, part of the exhibition “As We Grow Up” will be held on 9 March, co-organized by UNESCO, UNWOMEN with the participation of UNDP and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. The session is expected to attract more than 150 young people to discuss and exchange information, stories, experiences and views on Gender Stereotypes. The event will show some films made by young people of Viet Nam on gender stereotypes, facilitate in-depth discussion on the issues, including transgender matters. Breaking gender stereotypes as the root for gender-based discrimination is critical in the journey towards equalities between girls and boys, women and men and across gender spectrum.
Also, UNESCO continues to support to gender equality in media through assisting the Ministry of Information and Communications and Radio Voice of Viet Nam in the adaptation of UNESCO Gender-Sensitive Indicators in Media in 2014, leading to the formulation of relevant policies and strategies.
