She was granted this title to recognize her efforts to promote science as a power to bring countries together and contribute to positive changes in societies, for her commitment to strengthen the development of scientific thinking in her native country and beyond.

 “[…] Development will not be sustainable without science. Progress has no meaning if it only benefits the few … if it does not eliminate poverty, reduce inequalities, and protect the world we live in. The world needs over 1 million additional researchers by 2030. Today more than ever, we need more science and we need more scientists – especially women scientists. This requires will and commitment -- this call for leaders who are passionate and determined. I think we all agree, these qualities are perfectly reflected by Her Royal Highness,” said Ms Irina Bokova.

Her Royal Highness’ passion for science led her to act as chair of many scientific organizations. She as been the President of the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan since 2006, and also the Deputy-Chair of the Higher Council for Science and Technology, a government body that advises Jordan on public policy issues relating to science and technology. Moreover, Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan is Chair of the Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) in Amman. Princess Sumaya brings her active support to SESAME, the Synchroton-light for experimental science and applications in the Middle East, located in Allan, Jordan.

In her capacity as a UNESCO Special Envoy, Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint Hassan is invited to support UNESCO’s work in the field of Science Diplomacy.
