Dear all Journalists,

The Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), in close cooperation with UNESCO, will celebrate the World Teachers’ Day on Thursday, 5 October 2017 in Phnom Penh with around 1,200 participants from technical departments of the MoEYS, concerned Ministries, development partners, NGOs, local authorities and teachers.

In 2017, World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated around the world under the theme of “Teaching in freedom, empowering teachers” and the celebration at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris will focus on review of the 1997 UNESCO-ILO recommendations aimed at improving the status of teachers.

In Cambodia, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport in cooperation with UNESCO have decided to highlight the key role of teachers for the future development of the country and to celebrate the day under the slogan “Teacher is the Spiritual Inspiration of the New Generation”. In today’s globalized world, quality of education determines any country’s competitive advantage and teachers are the central pillars of quality learning.

The World Teachers’ Day will be presided over by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Excellency Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport and Ms. Anne Lemaistre, UNESCO Representative in Phnom Penh. The celebration of the World Teachers’ Day will start by their speeches, followed by panel discussions and innovative projects presentation.

You are all invited to join the event, on 5 October 2017 at National Institute of Education, Phnom Penh as scheduled.
