From 16 to 25 October 2017, Montréal, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, had the honour of hosting professionals from around the world as part of its very first World Design Summit. At the summit’s conclusion, an important declaration was adopted by many international organizations representing designers, architects, urban planners, and landscape architects.
From 16 to 25 October, Montreal, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, hosts an international reunion of unequalled scope: the World Design Summit. Under the theme “Bring About Change by Design”, this global meeting brings together professionals working in the four corners of the globe and in the six design disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, graphic design, industrial design and interior design.
Montréal, Canada, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, is launching an international multidisciplinary landscape architecture competition for the planning of Place des Montréalaises, a new public space in the city. The competition seeks the most innovative ideas for the permanent construction of Place des Montréalaises, which includes a pedestrian overpass leading to the adjacent Champ-de-Mars metro station.
The City of Montréal launched an international competition for the design of worksite information modules. The purpose of the modules — prototypes of which will be installed in summer 2017 on three specific sites — is to mitigate the adverse impacts of worksites on the quality of life of residents and the economic vitality of surrounding areas.
On 15 June, Mayor of Montréal, Denis Coderre and Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, met bilaterally giving them the opportunity to exchange on the role of Montreal within UNESCO, and the Creative Cities Network in particular. Montréal celebrates the 10th anniversary of its designation as a Creative City of Design. Its steadfast commitment to the Network made Montréal a key member.
From 3 to 15 May 2016, artists from the Centre for media arts Perte de Signal of the Creative City of Montreal (Design) will be collaborating with artists from the Creative City of Dakar (Media Arts) to run together a collaborative workshop-residency untitled “Libremapping”, in the framework of the Afropixel Festival whose main topic developed for this 5th edition is the “Common city”.
Held by the Kopula Collective on 12 March in Montreal, the first edition of Nordicité 2016 – Design and Sustainability in a Northern context symposium – sought to explore intersections of life in the North, design and environmental and social sustainability.
Since its designation in 2006 as a Creative City of Design, Montreal distinguished itself in establishing cooperation between and with UNESCO Creative Cities, both with Cities of Design including Graz (Austria), Saint-Étienne (France), Seoul (Republic of Korea) and with Cities of other creative fields such as Lyon (France) Creative City of Media Arts. The two events and the programme presented hereafter highlight Montreal’s engagement in UNESCO Creative Cities Network:
Some 62,000 visitors took part in the 86 different events organized during Design Month Graz (Designmonat Graz) in Austria, held from May 1 to 31 2015, and to which Montréal was invited as a guest of honour. For the occasion, the exhibition “I Was There: Montréal Meets Graz” presented the multiple facets of Montréal to visitors through immersive installations. A Bixi bike, clotheslines and a Tempo carport were among the iconic pieces included to convey “Montréalité” to visitors.
Two Creative Cities of Design, Montréal (Canada) and Graz (Austria) launched in May 2015 the exhibit «I was there: Montréal meets Graz», which is the central hub of Montréal’s presence at the Design Month in Graz.
