The Bia Biosphere Reserve in Ghana is one of three biosphere reserves (BRs) in Africa who benefited from the project Green Economy in Biosphere Reserves (GEBR): A means to biodiversity conservation, poverty reduction and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of the project was to diversify the economy of communities living in and around the Biosphere Reserves in order to reduce their overreliance on forest resources such as the non-timber forest products. The ultimate goal is to improve local communities’ socio-economic status while conserving biodiversity.
