On 13 October 2016, the General Assembly appointed Mr. António Guterres Secretary-General of the United Nations. Mr. Guterres assumed office on 1 January 2017. His five-year term ends on the last day of 2022. Here are some selected photographs highlighting his work since assuming office.
Secretary-General António Guterres began his tenure at the start of January, as we commenced a year that saw a continuation of many of the flashpoints and fault lines of 2016: continued conflict, escalating tensions, refugee and humanitarian crises spurred on by conflict and drought. The year brought with it many natural disasters, in the form of hurricanes, earthquakes, monsoons, landslides and fires. 2017 highlighted time and again how the work of the United Nations is as vital now as ever.
