Historic City of Ahmadabad
The walled city of Ahmadabad, founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in the 15th century, on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river, presents a rich architectural heritage from the sultanate period, notably the Bhadra citadel, the walls and gates of the Fort city and numerous mosques and tombs as well as important Hindu and Jain temples of later periods. The urban fabric is made up of densely-packed traditional houses (pols) in gated traditional streets (puras) with characteristic features such as bird feeders, public wells and religious institutions. The city continued to flourish as the capital of the State of Gujarat for six centuries, up to the present.

La ville fortifiée d’Ahmedabad a été fondée par le sultan Ahmad Shah au XVe siècle, sur la rive orientale du fleuve Sabarmati. Elle présente un riche patrimoine architectural de l’époque du sultanat, notamment la citadelle de Badhra, les murs et les portes de la ville fortifiée, et de nombreuses mosquées et sépultures ainsi que d’importants temples hindous et jaïns d’époques ultérieures. Le tissu urbain est formé de maisons traditionnelles (pols) densément regroupées le long de rues traditionnelles (puras) fermées par des portes, qui se caractérisent notamment par des mangeoires à oiseaux, des puits publics et des institutions religieuses. La ville a continué de prospérer en tant que capitale de l’État du Gujarat pendant six siècles, jusqu’à nos jours.

De ommuurde stad Ahmadabad werd gesticht door sultan Ahmad Shah in de 15e eeuw op de oostelijke oever van de Sabarmati rivier. De stad kent een rijk architecturaal erfgoed uit de periode van het sultanaat, zoals de Bhadra citadel, de muren en de poorten van de versterkte stad en vele moskeeën en tombes, evenals belangrijke Hindoe en Jain tempels uit latere periodes. De stad bestaat verder uit dicht opeengepakte traditionele huizen (pols) in traditionele straten die zijn afgezet met poorten (puras) met karakteristieke bijzonderheden als vogelvoedervoorzieningen, publieke waterbronnen en religieuze instituten. De stad bleef groeien als de hoofdstad van de staat Gujarat gedurende zes eeuwen, tot vandaag de dag.
