Maria Francesca Merloni appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities

UNESCO

4 October 2017, the UNESCO Director-General Mrs Irina Bokova designated Maria Francesca Merloni as Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities, through a ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

Mrs. Merloni has been appointed in quality of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, in recognition of her commitment to promoting the role of culture and creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

«You have been the prime contractor for the designation of Fabriano, as Creative City of UNESCO, for its craft activities rich in a very old tradition and great know-how. You have worked tirelessly on the labor of the Italian Creative Cities. This network is a chance and represents, I am convinced, a huge potential, for the development of sustainable urban policies, to illustrate the role of culture in social cohesion, for inclusion, for living together. [...] Culture is not only a political and development issue, it is this bond that unites us, it gives form to our aspirations, to our belongings, and it is the language of humanism and human dignity. Culture is what unites us, and this is value that we all share “, Said UNESCO Director Mrs Bokova.

The new Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities reaffirmed through an inspiring poem, her commitment to further advocate for the values and mission of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), a platform for cooperation with and among cities that place creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans.

“Being Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities is about becoming the keeper of the deep heart of cities’”, said Mrs Merloni.

Poet and Italian writer, his first collection of poems is written in 2004. One among others "Poesis”, which presents a harmonious and productive way of life, focused on shared values and on an idea that is not elitist but deeply shared.  From the experience of "Poesis" was born the inspiration for the project that took the city of Fabriano to be recognized Creative City of UNESCO.
