Who is the most famous person from Kaunas, Lithuania, of all times? If we think about art and culture, George Maciunas is the right answer.

Born in Kaunas in 1931, George Maciunas emigrated to Germany and then to the United States of America with his family in the wake of WW2. Later in New York, he became the founder and godfather of Fluxus – the international and interdisciplinary experimental art movement that took shape in the 1960s.

A new souvenir Fluxus Box from Kaunas, UNESCO Creative City of Design, is tracing the legacy of Maciunas in his hometown. The box notably comprises a set of postcards of the George Maciunas square and the Fluxus Cabinet at the Kaunas Picture Gallery. The Fluxus Box is now travelling to other UNESCO Creative Cities making discover more about the freethinker.

“There’s a clear parallel between the work of Maciunas, the new gift box and Kaunas in general – it’s all about variability, playfulness and a pinch of revolt.” said Andrijana Filinaitė, Focal Point for Kaunas, UNESCO Creative City of Design.
