Special Initiatives for Developing Countries

ICTP is particularly committed with the advancement of science in the developing world. The Marie Curie Library has its own service, eJDS, but is also glad to present and promote other initiatives addressing the same target. The electronic Journals Delivery Service (eJDS), set up by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) with the participation of major publishers, is geared to facilitate the access to current scientific literature free of cost in the fields of Physics and Mathematics for individual scientists. Research4Life is the collective name for the four programmes that provide developing countries with free or low cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content online: HINARI Research in Health with WHO, AGORA Research in Agriculture with FAO, OARE Environmental Research with UNEP, ARDI Research for Development and Innovation with WIPO

A free service for developing countries aimed to support researchers by providing documentation in Mathematics and Computer Science. The not-for-profit digital library of more than 1,500 academic journals, books and primary sources. JSTOR offers two special programs for free or reduced fees, the African Access Initiative (AAI) and the Developing Nations Access Initiative (DNAI). The Mathematical Reviews Database is the premier database covering the scholarly literature in the mathematical sciences, and is recognized worldwide as an indispensable tool for mathematical research. As part of its mission to promote mathematics scholarship and research around the world, the AMS offers deeply discounted MathSciNet subscriptions to developing nations.

EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) is an international not-for-profit organisation based in Europe with a global network of partners. Working in collaboration with libraries in more than 60 developing and transition countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, EIFL enables access to knowledge for education, learning, research and sustainable community development. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online is freely and immediately available to 100+ developing countries.
Since 2002, PNAS has provided free and immediate online access to its content in the developing world.
PNAS is committed to providing broad access to current scientific research across many fields and to fostering globalization of research tools and advances.

The Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS) is an integrated knowledge base dedicated to the health, maintenance, and future of life on planet Earth, focusing on sustainable development in all aspects from ecological issues to human security. This Internet-based archive is regularly updated, with contributions from thousands of scholars in over 100 countries, and edited by hundreds of subject experts.

EOLSS offers free access to Educational Institutions in The UN List of Least Developed Countries (LDC).

A list of journals offering free online access to developing economies. They are based on either programs such as Research4Life, or on a HighWire-based program offering access to developing countries. No registration needed, the software automatically detects the country you are connecting from and grants access accordingly.
