African Drought Atlas Development Workshop

The objective of this activity is to contribute to improved climate risk management in pilot areas, with a specific focus on the development of the African Drought Atlas, through capacity building of key African representatives from regional centres.
During the regional workshop on ‘Climate Change risk, Vulnerability Assessment and Early Warning for Africa’, held on 13-16 June 2017 at the AGRHYMET Center, the need was identified to develop a drought frequency atlas for the continent.

The training activity aims to contribute to the development of an atlas of regional hydro-climatic extreme events in the Africa region, using a Regional Frequency Analysis based on L-moments, to establish a standard method of hydrological frequency analysis for stakeholders in the institutional, public and private sectors of the region. This activity is an expansion of the earlier work realized in Latin America and the Caribbean as part of the MWAR-LAC project, and benefits from the already developed tools and methodologies.

In this phase the aim is to capacitate key representatives from the regional centers in the Africa Region on the use of the methodology in order to build capacity in the region for dissemination of the methodology, as well as to prepare for regional trainings in follow-up activities.

This activity is organized as part of the project “Addressing Water Security: Climate Impacts and Adaptation Responses in Africa, Asia and LAC”, and is embedded in the UNESCO G-WADI Programme of teh International Hydrological Programme.
