Sustainable Fishing on the Amazon Coast Project launches studies about socioeconomic contexts and the value chain of the activity in the region

During its three years of execution, the Project Sustainable Fishing on the Amazon Coast (PeSCA, in Portuguese acronym) has already benefited approximately 10 thousand families from around 30 fishing communities in the Brazilian states of Amapá, Maranhão and Pará. With events in each of the states, the Project will launch, within the next two weeks, three publications with diagnostics which assess the social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts in which the fishermen and fisherwomen live in, as well as assessments on the value chain of crab and of a few species of shrimp.

PeSCA is a cooperation between UNESCO in Brazil and Fundo Vale, and has the support of Mitsui Bussan do Brazil Foundation. It aims to improve income and the quality of life of fishermen and fisherwomen from the coasts of the states of Pará, Maranhão and Amapá, in addition to ensuring that the productive chain of local fishery resources is sustainable ecologically, economically and socially. The diagnostics counted on the partnership of the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF-Brasil), and will be able to subsidize the formulation of public policies in the region.

The events in which will be launched the three publications of the PeSCA have the support of local partners and of the National Youth Secretariat. The first event will occur on 26 June 2018, in São Luís City, to launch the diagnostic referring to the state of Maranhão. Then, on 29 June 2018, there will be a launch event in Macapá City, presenting the report for the state of Amapá. Finally, on 4 July 2018, in Belém City, will be launched the study referring to the state of Pará.

Publications

The Project carried out two diagnostics in each of the three states: the Sociocultural, Economic and Environmental Diagnostic, aiming to understand the life context of the communities and of artisanal fishermen of shrimp and crab; and the Fishery Value-Chain Diagnostic, to map and analyze all the links of the production and commercialization chain of fish, from capture to final consumption.

UNESCO in Brazil systematized the publications. For the development of the Fishery Value-Chain Diagnostic, UNESCO in Brazil counted on the partnership of CSF-Brasil. “The purpose of the publications is to provide technical inputs for the formulation of public policies that promote the sustainable development of artisanal fishing in Brazil. Fishing, in addition to generating jobs, business and income, contributes to the livelihoods and food security of many people and traditional communities of the country”, states the coordinator of the Natural Sciences Sector at UNESCO in Brazil, Fábio Eon.

The Director of CSF-Brazil, Pedro Gasparinetti Vasconcellos emphasizes: “This information is important so that the actors involved in the value chains may plan ahead, identifying bottlenecks in the productive processes and opportunities that need to be worked out and discussed by the communities, government and the private sector. Thus, the diagnostic is essential to direct investments, whether they are public, private or from institutions that support civil society, which aim to strengthen fishing as a sustainable income source, improving the conservation of fishery resources and the quality of life of the communities involved in the artisanal fishing value chains”.

The two diagnostics of each state make up the series Pesca Sustentável na Costa Amazônica (Sustainable Fishing on the Amazon Coast, in free translation), which is divided in three volumes (one for each state). The publications present hundreds of data on the value chains of piticaia shrimp and white shrimp in Maranhão; of crab and of Amazonian-regional shrimp in Pará, and of Amazonian-regional shrimp in Amapá, in addition to offering a detailed panel on the sociocultural, economic and environmental reality of a region that has artisanal fishing as one of its main activities.

The Fundo Vale Operations Director, Patrícia Daros, hopes that “the diagnostics will broaden the knowledge about the regional reality, inspire other similar initiatives and shed light to the importance of the conservation of coastal ecosystems and the economic activities developed in them”.

"With these diagnostics, we intend to contribute to fill the existing gap in terms of information and statistical data relating to artisanal fishing in the country”, adds the UNESCO in Brazil Environmental Officer and the Project PeSCA coordinator, Massimiliano Lombardo. The President of Mitsui Bussan do Brazil Foundation, Shinji Tsuchiya, concludes by saying that “the concept of sustainable fishing is very inspiring as an environment project, because the activity contributes to environmental conservation by means of improving the communities’ quality of life”.

About the events

On the launching events in each state, there will be a session presenting the main results of the Project and a debate with representatives of the various Project partners. They will discuss the current reality of artisanal fishing in each state, the challenges and development opportunities of the value chains of artisanal fishing and the legacies the Project leaves with the diagnostics.
