UNESCO IITE at International Conference on HIV and Children and Adolescents

UNESCO IITE took part in the International conference on HIV and Children and Adolescents organized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and supported by UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO and the Embassy of France in St. Petersburg on May 14-15, 2018.

The conference was attended by over 200 participants – medical doctors, social workers, psychologists, health managers, civil society representatives and HIV experts from Eastern and Western Europe and Central Asia. The conference participants discussed the achievements and challenges in HIV prevention and treatment among children and adolescents. Several sessions focused on provision of psychological support and social care to children and adolescents living with HIV as well as their access to education and protection from discrimination.

Mr. Tao Zhan, Director of UNESCO IITE, addressed the conference participants at the opening ceremony and at a session on stigmatization and HIV and urged them to make every effort to ensure protection of children and adolescents living with HIV from discrimination in health care and educational institutions, including schools and pre-schools.

Tigran Yepoyan, UNESCO regional HIV and health education advisor, spoke at a session on psychological and social support to children living with HIV and presented a school guide on protection of students living with HIV from discrimination developed by UNESCO IITE.
