Europe/Rome The climate community is still faced with large uncertainties in estimating possible climate changes in the next decades and quantifying the relative role of anthropogenic contribution to climate change. Although most modern climate models are able to reproduce reasonably well global climatologies and patterns of interannual variations, they still struggle with pervasive biases and the representation of some of the climate phenomena involving the interaction and coupling between the atmosphere, the ocean and the cryosphere. The problem is compounded by the limited understanding of some of the physical mechanisms giving rise to both our present mean climate and its natural variability at different time scales. One possible way forward is the use of a hierarchy of models to tackle the most pressing questions in climate dynamics and modeling. Key among them, is whether the climate is stable, or whether internal feedbacks could lead to tipping points, abrupt changes, and transitions to fundamentally different equilibria. Changes in the oceanic overturning, ice-albedo effects, land-surface and vegetation coupling to the atmosphere, and radiative-convective properties of the atmosphere have all been suggested as possible causes of instability in the climate system. Advances in our understanding, quantification, and modelling of these processes are necessary both for the interpretation of the paleoclimate record and for the projection of possible future climate states. A variety of studies have found that multiple equilibria exist both in highly idealized and more comprehensive models of the climate system. Whether multiple equilibria do exist in state-of-the-art climate models is still a subject of controversy. A fundamental understanding of key processes within a hierarchical modeling framework will eventually translate into a better representation and simulation within state-of-the-art climate models, as it brings new insights for process-based evaluation of climate model reliability and fit for purpose. The use of hierarchies additionally promotes the use of standardized performance metrics and highlights instances when post-processing approaches (e.g. bias correction) or diverse model tuning practices should be explored. The school will be based on lectures on theoretical aspects of atmosphere, ocean and climate dynamics, with a focus on the present state of established knowledge and relevant mechanisms. The topic of the school, Multiple Equilibra in the Climate System, will be the subject of afternoon lectures, giving an overview of the most recent progress and hypotheses suggesting the existence of multiple equilibrium states, and consequences for past and future climates. Afternoons will also be devoted to practical sessions, involving the use of simplified climate models and analysis of relevant data sets. Europe/Rome The AdS/CFT correspondence conjectures an exact equivalence between string theories in anti-de-Sitter space and gauge theories. This correspondence and its generalizations allow one to address difficult problems of strongly coupled field theory dynamics - such as the computation of Wilson loops - using weakly coupled gravity. The other way around, it also allows one to tackle fundamental questions of gravity - such as the quantum entropy of black holes - using field theoretic methods. A very important theoretical development of the last decade has been the advent of exact results in supersymmetric field theories using the methods of localization. These methods often reduce path-integrals to finite-dimensional integrals, which in many situations can be computed exactly. Being exact, localization results are most fruitfully applied at strong coupling, and thus provide a powerful framework for producing and exploiting AdS/CFT results. In particular, the interplay of localization and the AdS/CFT correspondence provides a fertile ground to answer precise questions about the entropy of string theoretic black holes and the expectation values of Wilson loops. This School aims to provide the necessary knowledge to work at the interface of supersymmetric localization and holography, through a series of pedagogical lectures by individual speakers. The activity is intended for students in theoretical physics or mathematics and postdocs with knowledge of quantum field theory, general relativity and string theory. Europe/Rome The Workshop follows the ICTP Summer School on Theory, Mechanisms and Hierarchical Modelling of Climate Dynamics: Multiple Equilibria in the Climate System. Reliable projections of tropical rainfall changes are key to any climate adaption efforts in a warming world. Yet, our global climate models are a subpar tool for the task: their spatial resolution is too coarse to reproduce the deep convection that produces most rainfall in the tropics, and current parametrizations are inadequate – as signified by persistent biases in the simulation of the annual and diurnal cycles of rainfall in large areas of the oceans and continents, as well as the response to forcing of the past. Nonetheless, tropical rainfall is organized in the large-scale structures of the monsoons and the ITCZ whose dynamics are shaped by large-scale energetic and momentum constraints that involve the global circulation of both the ocean and the atmosphere. This suggests that building a coherent understanding of tropical rainfall can benefit from an understanding of these large-scale influences and their coupling with small scale cloud and precipitation processes. Making this link across scales to improve our understanding and our ability to anticipate future tropical rainfall changes is a key question in climate science. The workshop, building on the knowledge and practical skills acquired during the school, aims to bring together expertise on large-scale atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, small scale cloud and precipitation processes, hierarchical climate modeling and observation. Europe/Rome Abstract: In this talk we examine the regularity theory of the solutions to a few examples of (nonlinear) PDEs. Arguing through a genuinely geometrical method, we produce regularity results in Sobolev and Hölder spaces, including some borderline cases. Our techniques relate a problem of interest to another one - for which a richer theory is available - by means of a geometric structure, e.g., a path. Ideally, information is transported along such a path, giving access to finer properties of the original equation. Our examples include elliptic and parabolic fully nonlinear problems, the Isaacs equation, degenerate examples and a double divergence model. Geometric regularity for (nonlinear) PDEs

Europe/Rome Surfactant spreading at air-water interfaces is driven by flow setup by surface tension gradients (Marangoni stress) established by the surfactants themselves. We experimentally probe the nature of steady surfactant transport on the interface when the resulting flow is strongest in a thin boundary layer near the interface. In particular, we present three experimental hydrodynamic signatures to distinguish between two limiting cases, viz. adsorption versus dissolution dominated transport, without invoking the surfactant's physico-chemical properties. In a region much larger than the surfactant source, but much smaller than the interfacial area, the steady-state fluid velocity assumes a self-similar form whose magnitude decays as a power-law with the distance from the source. We experimentally demonstrate that this power-law possesses an exponent -3/5 in adsorption and -1 in dissolution dominated flow. Explicit measurement of boundary layer and shear stress provide additional hydrodynamic signatures of surfactant transport mechanisms in the two limiting cases. We test this criterion against two known surfactants, Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Tergitol 15-S-9, and apply the results to camphoric acid, with unknown surface properties. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Geometric Computation of Betti numbers of Springer varieties

Europe/Rome Abstract. Bosonic ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) would form cored density distributions at the center of galaxies. These cores, seen in numerical simulations, admit analytic description as the lowest energy bound state solution ("soliton") of the Schroedinger-Poisson equations. Numerical simulations of ULDM galactic halos found an empirical scaling relation between the mass of the large-scale host halo and the mass of the central soliton. We show that this relation predicts that the peak circular velocity, measured for the host halo in the outskirts of the galaxy, should approximately repeat itself in the central region. Contrasting this prediction to the measured rotation curves of well-resolved near-by galaxies, we show that ULDM in the mass range m ~ (10-22 - 10-21) eV, which has been invoked as a possible solution to the small-scale puzzles of CDM, is in tension with the data. Europe/Rome Aim of the workshop The workshop on the emerging field of biological operations research – the application of operations research methodologies in systems and molecular cell biology – is designed to bring together participants and lecturers versed in either of the two disciplines that are eager to further uncover the deep connections between the two fields and find new avenues for research and collaboration while gaining new insight on biological functions from an operational and system perspective. The long-term goal of the workshop is to boost research and collaboration in this field, by acquainting researchers with the existing long-standing problems in system biology, molecular cell biology and bacterial physiology. We will explore the deep connections between these problems and those that arise in operations research, e.g. the question of regulation of mass production in an uncertain market, dynamic resource allocation, scheduling problems and the impact of different queuing disciplines of speed and efficiency of a complex production facility. All of the course topics lie at thematic intersections. The course on Galois representations will focuse on their connections with modular forms and elliptic curves. The course on arithmetic groups will involve familiarizing students with topics in group theory and modular forms. Equidistribution in a diophantine context will be the main subject of a course. Another lecture series will focus on analysis, combinatorics and discrete geometry. The study of curves over finite fields, and the resulting codes, will allow for an accessible introduction to deep issues in algebraic geometry, with immediate applications. Finally, the course on primes, parity and analysis will combine classical tools and the use of entropy and independence. The plan is, then, to introduce advanced students to a variety of fields and tools and to notable recent developments. Europe/Rome Goals and brief description of the conference Defects in crystalline solids are ubiquitous. It is the second law of thermodynamics that gives rise to the appearance of a certain amount of disorder in crystalline materials at finite temperatures. Moreover, defects can be present in synthetic materials well above the equilibrium concentration due to the imperfections of material production processes or due to the exposure of the system to irradiation with energetic particles. Such lattice imperfections have a strong influence on the electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the solids, normally deteriorating their characteristics. However, defects not always have detrimental effects on material properties, with the most prominent example being the doping of semiconductors by controllable introduction of impurities using ion implantation. In general, treatments of solids with beams of energetic ions and electrons have been shown to be a very powerful tool for the post-synthesis tailoring of material characteristics. The goal of the conference is to bring together active researchers in the field, as well as several experts in the related areas, to discuss "state of the art" in theory and experiment dealing with the physics of defects in solids. The effects of impurities and point/line defects on various properties of solids will be addressed, and the attendees will be able to learn not only the experimental facts, but also understand how the defects are treated within the framework of computational and analytical methods in theoretical physics. Particular attention is going to be paid to defects in nanomaterials, as the reduced dimensionality strongly affects their behavior. The Program will include about 20 oral presentations given by invited speakers, a poster session, and a limited number of short talks selected from contributed abstracts. Europe/Rome This is a three-week school and workshop on homological methods in algebra and geometry. The first two weeks will be a school for students from East Africa and beyond. International and African researchers will join for a workshop in the third week. The school begins with two introductory courses on some basic techniques that are widely used in the area. These are then built upon in the second week with slightly more advanced topics. The goal here is to give the participants a glimpse into some ideas used in algebraic geometry and homological algebra with the hope of inspiring them to pursue further research in a related topic. The school is intended for advanced graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) and young academic staff members from East Africa and beyond. Senior academic members are also welcome to participate. In the last week, the activity turns into a research focus-session involving international and African experts. Europe/Rome Abstract. In principle, we expect that our cosmos has experienced a series of complicated phase transitions. Exploring the corresponding consequences and discriminating between various types of mentioned phase transitions are therefore of interest not only from theoretical approaches but also from observational points of view. In this talk, relying on an extensive simulation of cosmic strings networks, I examine the CMB random field induced by a typical topological defects which is so-called cosmic strings as a part of ISW phenomenon. I will use various robust topological measures accompanied by some multi-scale reductions to quantify our ability to detect the probable cosmic strings networks. To this end I also utilize extensive Machine learning algorithm to find best feature sequences which are more sensitive for searching such one-dimensional defect. At the end of the week we will discuss some simple examples of structural stability and renormalization. Week 2 Ergodicity in smooth dynamics (10h, Jana Rodriguez-Hertz and Amie Wilkinson) The concept of ergodicity is a central hypothesis in statistical mechanics, one whose origins can be traced to Boltzmann's study of ideal gases in the 19th century. Loosely speaking, a dynamical system is ergodic if it does not contain any proper subsystem, where the notion of "proper" is defined using measures. A powerful theorem of Birkhoff from the 1930's states that ergodicity is equivalent to the property that "time averages = space averages:" that is, the average value of a function taken along an orbit is the same as the average value over the entire space. The property of ergodicity is the first stepping stone in a path through the study of statistical properties of dynamical systems, a field known as Ergodic Theory. We will develop the ergodic theory of smooth dynamical systems, starting with the fundamental, linear examples of rotations and doubling maps on the circle introduced in Week 1. We will develop some tools necessary to establish ergodicity of nonlinear smooth systems, such as those investigated by Boltzmann and Poincaré in the dawn of the subject of Dynamical Systems. Among these tools are distortion estimates, density points, invariant foliations and absolute continuity. Closer to the end of the course, we will focus on the ergodic theory of Anosov diffeomorphisms, an important family of "toy models" of chaotic dynamical systems. Renormalization in entropy zero systems (5h, Corinna Ulcigrai) Rotations of the circle are perhaps the most basic examples of low complexity (or "entropy zero") dynamical systems. A key idea to study systems with low complexity is renormalization. The Gauss map and continued fractions can be seen as a tool to renormalize rotations, i.e.study the behaviour of a rotation on finer and finer scales. Europe/Rome The School is a certificate course providing specialized education and training on development and implementation of knowledge management programmes in nuclear science and technology organizations. It is intended for young professionals in current or future leading roles in managing nuclear knowledge. Description: Jointly organized by ICTP and the IAEA since 2004, this Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM) School focuses on methodologies and practices, and explores various dimensions of nuclear knowledge management. These include processes and tools, challenges and benefits, culture influence, relationship with human resource development, IT for knowledge preservation and sharing. Learning is supplemented with real life examples from NKM programmes in different types of nuclear organizations. The aim is to encourage ‘forward thinking’ and to enable participants to apply theory and insights in their daily work. Pre-training is done via e-learning for a common understanding of the basics, allowing a more efficient interaction with peers and lecturers during the in-class School. Lectures at the ICTP by recognized experts are followed by case studies, practical work and breakout sessions where participants will have the opportunity to discuss issues and solutions. NKM group projects are also developed over the week. Shortlisted candidates will undergo an on-line pre-training course and a test, the results of which will be one of the elements to define the final list of participants. Europe/Rome The Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Ghana (https://coessing.org) is an international collaboration aimed at building capacity in oceanographic and environmental sciences in Ghana specifically, and Africa more generally. The Summer School was previously held in 2015, 2016 and 2017. We intend to hold the schools every year, and to alternate the schools between Regional Maritime University and University of Ghana, which are both located in Ghana's capital city of Accra. Marine issues of great importance to Ghana include fisheries, piracy, pollution, shipping and port management, and the recent advent of offshore oil drilling. Long-term goals of our collaborative effort include securing funding to continue the school on an annual basis, increasing the number of links with institutions in other African countries, and incorporating research partnerships as part of the summer school. Europe/Rome Abstract: Consider a quantum chain in its ground state and then take a subdomain of this system with natural truncated hamiltonian. Since the total hamiltonian does not commute with the truncated hamiltonian the subsystem can be in one of its eigenenergies with different probabilities. Since the global energy eigenstates are locally close to diagonal in the local energy eigenbasis we argue that the Shannon(Renyi) entropy of these probabilities follows an area-law for the gapped systems. When the system is at the critical point the Shannon(Renyi) entropy follows a logarithmic behaviour with a universal coefficient. Our results show that the Shannon(Renyi) entropy of the subsystem energies closely mimics the behaviour of the entanglement entropy in quantum chains. We support the arguments by detailed numerical calculations performed on the transverse field XY-chain. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Europe/Rome Complex networks describe the architecture of complex systems ranging from the brain to social networks. Recently it has become clear that in order to understand network data it is important characterize network structures with advanced topological and geometrical approaches. Here we discuss a model for emergent hyperbolic geometry called 'Network Geometry with Flavor' that describes complex growing simplicial complexes and extend previous modelling framework on growing complex networks. We will present the holographic properties of this model and its intrinsic complex network structure. Finally we will discuss the mapping between the Network Geometry with Flavor and Tree Tensor Networks and we will comment on the open recent questions that this mapping raises for modelling Complex Quantum Networks. Europe/Rome Conditions for applying in this School: Selected candidates will be expected to actively engage in the programme and present a 20' minute talk (with a time for discussion and questions included) describing own or own group's research summarizing important or recent results on wasteform, spent fuel or nuclear materials of relevance to immobilization studies. Participants are encouraged to set their work in the context of their own national waste management strategy and should first give a brief overview of the types of waste produced and managed in her/his country, and then a current status of waste conditioning and disposal practice (both by means of one or two summary slides). SCHOOL DESCRIPTION: Nuclear waste management is a core issue for sustainable development and long-term viability of nuclear energy as energy supply. The main goal of this school is the dissemination of knowledge on optimal methods of synthesis and study of crystalline and glass-crystalline wasteforms for the immobilization of actinides and other long-lived dangerous radionuclides. It aims on transferring experience of ceramic and glass-composite materials fabrication from leading experts to specialists interested in reliable immobilization of toxic nuclides. Europe/Rome Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass derived feedstocks offers a promising avenue for effective carbon recycling from renewable energy resources. To retain economic viability of this target technology, rational design of electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity towards producing value-added chemicals and fuels is necessary. For improved conversion of biomass resources to fuels and fine chemicals, understanding and controlling the aqueous-phase catalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds on metals is crucial. Unlike gas-phase hydrogenation, the presence of water and the solid/liquid interface play critical roles in catalysis. Although there have been extensive studies in electrocatalysis, there exists a lack of mechanistic exploration and molecular-level understanding of electrocatalytic conversion of organic compounds specifically pertaining to biomass feedstocks. Moreover, these reactions occur at the solvated electrode-electrolyte interface where complex interactions between the electrode and solvent molecules have a critical influence on the reaction chemistry. In this talk, I will address the effect of the solvent and the charged metal electrode on the reaction pathways and their capacity to undergo reduction/hydrogenation. Results of molecular-scale structural/electronic properties near the electrochemical interface and the reaction energetics of target organic compounds obtained from density-functional-theory(DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations will be presented. The inferences drawn will be used to postulate design criteria for electrocatalytic conversion of organic compounds from an experimental and theoretical perspective. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

The recent development of low cost technologies (electronic boards, sensors, 3D printing, etc.) can empower scientists and educators from developing countries in fostering scientific knowledge. Europe/Rome The workshop introduces young and established nuclear scientists to the evaluation of nuclear structure and decay data, by providing an overview of experimental and theoretical nuclear techniques and basic training in the evaluation procedures and formats involved in the production of the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF). Reliable evaluated nuclear structure and decay data are of vital importance for basic nuclear physics and astrophysics, as well as for nuclear applications such as power generation, material analysis, dosimetry and medical diagnostics. These important data requirements are catered by the international network of Nuclear Structure and Decay Data (NSDD) Evaluators, created in 1974 and coordinated by the IAEA. The main output of this network is the recommended ENSDF database and evaluations published in Nuclear Data Sheets. This workshop belongs to a series of ICTP workshops that started in 2003 and have been crucial for attracting young nuclear scientists to nuclear structure and decay data evaluation and for providing them with the basic tools to pursue this activity. Europe/Rome Regional climate models (RCMs) have become important tools to study climate variability and change at regional scales. They can also be used to provide climate change information for impact and adaptation studies. Within the context of RCM research, the Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX) provides the basis for generating multi-model RCM-based projections over regions Worldwide. The community of users of the ICTP regional model RegCM is one of the most active in contributing to the CORDEX program and in involving the scientific community from developing countries in climate change research. Europe/Rome The Second Regional Maker Expo of Open Technologies and Inclusive Development will take place on 27 and 28 October 2018 in Guatemala, at Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias. This public event, originated by the ICTP Science Dissemination Unit (SDU), aims at bringing together science, technology and the community of resourceful and creative people for the benefit of all. Maker Expos indeed bring together design, engineering, creativity and enthusiasm to showcase projects at the intersection of science, art and technology. This event focuses on open source, open hardware, citizen science, do-it-yourself solutions and innovative approaches to local problems empowered by collaboration through the Internet. GOALS Besides bringing science and technology closer to the public, this Maker Expo aims to be a platform where designers, engineers, inventors (or "Makers") meet in a single place to exchange ideas and resources, make contacts, meet proactive people to form working groups and collaborations. TOPICS Science Projects Prototyping Technologies 3D Printers Robotics, RC Toys, Drones DIY Automation and IoT Sound Utensiles/Instruments Low Cost Microcopmputers Modular Architecture Recycling Electronics ACTIVITIES Mathematical Games Fun Electronics Interactive Art Projects Arts and Crafts Workshopos Programming Tinkering/Hacking Etc... PARTICIPATION Scientists and Makers from all countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA, may attend the event, however, since this is a regional activity, priority will be given to those coming from Guatemala and neighbouring countries. Europe/Rome The plasma college will be devoted to a very broad and fast developing field that encompasses the study of macroscopic “collective phenomena” in a variety of settings, spanning the classical/quantum domains, laboratory, space, astrophysics, and cosmological systems, magnetic and laser induced fusion, laser created high energy density physics, etc. Topics: Elementary / advanced treatment of fundamental processes in plasma physics-collective phenomena, coherent nonlinear phenomena, self-organization, plasma turbulence. Applications to magnetic fusion theory, experiments, design and simulation. A scientific review of magnetic fusion research all the way to JET and ITER will be provided. Applications to astrophysical/cosmic plasmas (solar, planetary and stellar magnetospheres, jets etc.), and exotic plasmas (general relativistic, quantum, quantum-relativistic). At the basis of this performance is the ability to understand the sensory input from the external world and to associate it with effective strategies to achieve the desired goal.
