Europe/Rome After showing how to prove the integrated c-theorem within the functional RG framework based on the effective average action, we derive an exact RG flow equation for Zamolodchikov's c-function in two dimensions by relating it to the flow of the effective average action. In order to obtain a non-trivial flow for the c-function, we will need to understand the general form of the effective average action away from criticality, where nonlocal invariants, with beta functions as coefficients, must be included in the ansatz to be consistent. We then apply our construction to several examples: exact results, local potential approximation and loop expansion. In each case we construct the relative approximate c-function and find it to be consistent with Zamolodchikov's c-theorem. Europe/Rome Abstract: The quasiparticle concept is the foundation of our understanding of the dynamics of many-body quantum systems. It originated in the theory of metals, which have electron-like quasiparticles; but it is also useful in more exotic states like those found in fractional quantum Hall systems. However, modern materials abound in systems to which the quasiparticle picture does not apply, and developing their theoretical description remains one of the most important challenges in condensed matter physics. I will present an elementary description of two key models without quasiparticle excitations, both motivated by recent experiments. The first is the superfluid-insulator transition of ultracold bosonic atoms trapped in optical lattices in two spatial dimensions. Its low energy theory is a conformal field theory in 2+1 spacetime dimensions, and this fact allows us to gain insight from the AdS/CFT correspondence of string theory. The second model is the Pomeranchuk instability of two dimensional metals at which 90 degree lattice rotation symmetry is broken. Such an instability has been found to play a prominent role in many recent experiments on the high temperature superconductors in the vicinity of the "strange metal" regime. The Pomeranchuk critical point realizes a metal with a Fermi surface, but no sharp quasiparticle excitations. I will summarize our current understanding, which draws upon the methods of quantum field theory and holography. I will conclude with a perspective on the physics of the high temperature superconductors. The lectures will review key background material on Fermi liquid theory and the theory of phase transitions, and will not assume knowledge of string theory or the AdS/CFT correspondence. Europe/Rome Mobile Science (6 February 2014) followed by Science Dissemination for the Disabled (7 February 2014) m-Science as such, comprises three main subjects of interest with a great impact on the society: sensing, computing and dissemination of scientific knowledge by the use of mobile devices. As a follow up of our previous first workshop on m-Science (held in Trieste in 2010), the stateof-the-art topics to be covered are among others: • mobile data collection and environmental monitoring, e.g., in caves and Karst areas, • participatory remote sensing at large scale, • use of mobile devices to raise scientific awareness and promote education for all, • capture brainwave data to mobile devices, • access to science by the disabled. Particular attention will be paid towards innovation within a scientific environment and the existing projects and technologies to be usable by people with disabilities to study science. Europe/Rome Given an orthonormal basis {e_n} in a de Branges space (a certain Hilbert space of entire functions), and i.i.d. random variables {a_n} with real normal distribution N(0,1), we consider the Gaussian Analytic Function: F(z)=\sum_n a_n e_n(z). In this talk, we will present some results on the distribution of the real zeroes of F(z). It is natural that this random set contains information about the underline Hilbert space. We will see that this information is enough to characterize, up to some nice isomorphism, the de Branges space. We will also show some partial results on the hole probability. We will pay special attention to the Paley-Wiener space, and the spaces associated to the Airy and Bessel functions, because these three spaces also appear in point processes related to random matrices.This talk is based on a joint work with Jordi Marzo and Jan-Fredrik Olsen. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in collaboration with the International Commission for Optics (ICO), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the European Optical Society (EOS), the Societa Italiana di Ottica e Fotonica (SIOF), the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS), and the International Society on Optics Within Life Sciences (OWLS) will organize a Winter College on Optics: fundamentals of Photonics - Theory, Devices and Applications, which will be held at ICTP, Trieste, Italy, from 10 to 21 February, 2014. The Winter College consists of four parts. The first one presents foundations of electromagnetic optics, optical waveguides and photodetectors. The second part is dedicated to integrated optics theory, photonic circuits design, numerical simulations, special sources for integrated optics ending with special dedication to photonic materials, assembling and packing techniques. The third part of the course will be dedicated to technological applications of waveguide platform and optoelectronic circuits. Finally, the fourth part concentrates in particular photonics devices, non-linear photonics and plasmonics and ending with applications of photonics in biomedicine and renewable energy. Europe/Rome The Telecommunications/ICT for Development Laboratory (T/ICT4D) of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy), in collaboration with the International elecommunication Union - Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU/BDT), the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and the National Institute of Telecommunications (NIT, Poland), is organising a School on Open Spectrum and Applications of White Spaces Technologies to be held in Trieste from 3 to 14 March 2014. In the last couple of years a new opportunity for spectrum use has emerged in the form of TV White Spaces (TVWS). Originally conceived as a technology that could take advantage of the guard bands or "white spaces" that were left between television channels to prevent interference, TVWS has the potential to address research challenges of remote academic institutions, as well as opening up alternatives for building community wireless networks. Traditional spectrum allocation methods are unlikely to be able to cope with the exponential growth in demand for broadband access in emerging markets. There is a pressing need to examine alternative models of spectrum allocation. Dynamic spectrum sharing based on software and cognitive radio can play a significant role in tomorrow's telecommunication systems. With the final goal of connecting Research and Education Centres to the Internet with low cost means to improve Internet access, the School will examine the state of the art in Open Spectrum and TVWS technologies and emerging regulations. The school will address the latest information from TVWS pilots around the world and will include hands-on sessions. The following key topics will be discussed: • Radio Physics • Software Defined Radio • Cognitive Radio • Open Spectrum Acess • TV White Spaces Technologies Case studies from TV White deployments will be presented. Europe/Rome Tropical geometry has nowadays several, different facets related to algebraic gometry, commutative algebra, symplectic geometry, optimization, low-dimensional topology, knot theory and physics. In the context of enumerative geometry the idea is to replace objects from algebraic geometry by combinatorial objects, we say we tropicalize these objects. The key feature of tropicalization is that important information about the objects (related to the problem studied) is conserved. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria) is organizing a Workshop on "Nuclear Structure and Decay Data: Theory and Evaluation" to be held at ICTP in Trieste from 24 - 28 March 2014. The Workshop constitutes a unique opportunity for scientists to gain extensive and up- to-date training on the evaluation of nuclear structure and decay data, as developed to produce the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and Nuclear Data Sheets for use and adoption by the nuclear physics community. Reliable evaluated nuclear structure and decay data are of vital importance in a large number of energy and non- energy based applications such as power generation, materials analysis, dosimetry and medical diagnostics, as well as basic nuclear physics and astrophysics. Important features of these needs are satisfied by the work undertaken by the International Network of Nuclear Structure and Decay Data (NSDD) Evaluators. Europe/Rome Helical modes, in which the momentum and spin quantum numbers are strongly coupled, have recently appeared in the front line of one-dimensional physics through the discovery of materials exhibiting the quantum spin-Hall effect. The fascinating conduction properties of the edge states of such materials is determined not just by the naturally strongly correlated nature of one-dimensional quantum systems, but also through the helical nature of such modes. In this presentation, I will consider two examples of helical modes. The first arises in the edge states of the quantum spin-Hall effect, where I will consider how the helical structure of the states influences the Kondo effect when one traps a single spin within a double constriction. The second example appears when domain walls are induced into the quantum Hall state of bilayer graphene under appropriate gating. I will demonstrate that one-dimensional helical modes form on this kink, which may then be tuned through a quantum phase transition in the Z_2 universality class. The helical nature of the modes means the two phases on either side of this transition have distinct conducting properties, in particular one is superfluid and the other is insulating. Europe/Rome We report experimental data and theoretical analysis of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned graphene monolayers in a weak magnetic field. Close enough to the neutrality point, the coexistence of electrons and holes in each layer leads to a dramatic increase of the drag resistivity. Away from charge neutrality, we observe nonzero Hall drag. The observed phenomena are explained by decoupling of electric and quasiparticle currents which are orthogonal at charge neutrality. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics is organizing, in collaboration with the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras, a Conference on Open-Source Tools for Enhancing Teaching, Learning and Research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to be held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras from 6 to 11 April 2014. INTRODUCTION A growing trend in educational institutions is the use of various electronic and other computer based aids as tools for enhancing the teaching and learning experience. From simple electronic aids such as presentation slides, web based learning management systems and more complex audio-video based learning/collaborative systems are now widely used in many scientific and academic environments. This conference brings together scientists and educators with an aim on sharing experiences along-side practical demonstrations of various open-source tools/techniques for enhancing teaching, learning and research in the STEM disciplines. TOPICS TO BE COVERED DURING THE ACTIVITY INCLUDE: •Introduction to e-learning •Tools for enhancing course management. •Tools for enhancing teaching •Tools for enhancing collaborative learning •Tools for enhancing grading (assignments, tests and examinations) •Tools for enhancing practical laboratory work PARTICIPATION This activity is aimed primarily at scientists, educators and other support staff that currently use or plan to deploy electronic or computer based tools/aids in supporting teaching, learning and research in a STEM discipline. Participants from all countries, which are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA, may attend the workshop, however, since this is a regional activity, priority will be given to applicants coming from the region. As the School will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. Although the main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation, a limited number of students from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be borne by their home institutions. Every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare (or at least half fare). However, limited funds are available for some participants, who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country, and who are not more than 45 years old. Europe/Rome Abstract. Holography can be used to study the physics of strongly coupled quantum field theories at finite density, which may be at work in certain real materials. However, the conservation of momentum in these field theories means that they have unrealistic transport properties, such as an infinite electrical conductivity. I will give a summary of recent progress in constructing gravitational solutions which are dual to field theories which dissipate momentum. I will explain how these gravitational solutions are related to theories of massive gravity, and what the transport properties of the dual field theories are. Finally, I will describe a simple mechanism, which is natural from the holographic point of view, by which strongly interacting metals can acquire a linear in temperature resistivity, as is observed in the strange metal phase of the cuprates. Europe/Rome The purpose of this college is to address the capability gap that exists in many developing countries and help build necessary expertise to identify NAMAs in the energy system development and to assess their effectiveness in combating climate change. As the major source of GHG emissions, the energy system will inevitably be affected by international environmental agreements targeted at avoiding dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Since over two-thirds of the projected increase in world energy demand is expected to occur in developing countries, their energy technology choices and investment decisions will have considerable impact on the international efforts towards mitigation of climate change. As an important contribution to these efforts, the international community under UNFCCC has agreed that developing countries submit (voluntary) plans on National Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) aimed at avoiding/reducing future GHG emissions. Hence, there is a need not only to identify and evaluate cost-effective NAMAs but also to better understand the challenges and opportunities for the development of energy systems under alternative and/or complementary response actions to climate change at national and international levels. Reconciling the national actions on climate and policies on energy with international targets is extremely challenging. During the college the above themes will be addressed through a series of lectures and hands-on laboratory classes using state-of-the-art modelling tools. Europe/Rome Regional climate models (RCMs) are widely used tools to produce high resolution climate simulations at regional scales. The ICTP regional climate modeling system, RegCM, is one of the most used RCMs worldwide, with applications ranging from regional process studies to paleoclimate, climate change, chemistry-climate and biosphere-atmosphere interactions. A new version of the model, RegCM4, has been completed and released in 2012, but new features are being included for release during this workshop, such as the CLM4.5 land surface scheme, a new cloud microphysics scheme and coupling with the MIT Ocean model. As in previous workshops of this series, this event will provide lectures and extensive hands-on sessions on the theory of regional climate change and regional climate modeling as well as on the use of the RegCM4 modeling system. The focus of the present workshop will be on the application of the RegCM4 within the international program CORDEX (COordinated Regional Downscaling EXperiment. The primary aim of CORDEX is to produce a new generation of large multi-model ensembles of regional climate change projections over domains covering all continental areas of the world for use in impact assessment and adaptation studies. The RegCM community contributes to CORDEX through the completion of numerical experiments over different CORDEX domains. The workshop is thus intended to provide a forum to assess and intercompare these experiments within the context of the goals of CORDEX. The workshop is also aimed at providing a forum for current and future model users to discuss relevant issues and formulate needs and priorities for further model development and dissemination. A limited number of participants is envisioned, with proven experience in climate modeling and a strong interest in using the RegCM4 system for regional climate studies. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Europe/Rome We predict, using a free-energy calculation, that the quantum phase transition between the U(1) quantum spin liquid (QSL) and antiferromagnet (AFM) phases in certain pyrochlore quantum spin ice is first order rather than second order. This change in order from second to first order is induced by gauge fluctuations, which are explicitly taken into account at gauge theory level in our effective low-energy theory. We therefore have identified a fluctuation-induced first-order quantum phase transition in pyrochlore quantum spin ice. We explicitly derive the quantum free-energy description of this QSL-to-AFM phase transition and predict that it is a weakly first-order phase transition. Europe/Rome IoT describes a system where items in the physical world, and sensors within or attached to these items, are connected to the Internet via wireless and wired Internet connections. These sensors can use various types of local area connections such as RFID, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. Sensors can also have wide area connectivity such as GSM, GPRS, 3G, and LTE. The physical objects that are being connected will possess one or more sensors. Each sensor will monitor a speciﬁc condition such as location, vibration, motion and temperature. In IoT, these sensors will connect to each other and to systems that can understand or present information from the sensor’s data feeds. IoT data differs from traditional computing. The data can be small in size and frequent in transmission. The number of devices, or nodes, that are connecting to the network are also greater in IoT than in traditional PC computing. Machine-to-Machine communications and intelligence drawn from the devices and the network will allow businesses to automate certain basic tasks without depending on central or cloud based applications and services. These attributes present opportunities to collect a wide range of data but also provide challenges in terms of designing the appropriate data networking and security. Europe/Rome Site-occupancy disorder, defined as the non-periodic occupation of lattice sites in a crystal structure, is a ubiquitous phenomenon in solid-state physics and chemistry. Examples are mineral solid solutions, synthetic non-stoichiometric compounds and metal alloys. The experimental investigation of these materials using diffraction techniques only provides averaged information of their structure. However, many properties of interest in these solids are determined by the local geometry and degree of disorder, which escape an “average crystal” description, either from experiments or from theory. In this talk, I will introduce a methodology for the computer simulation of site-disordered solids, based on the consideration of configurational ensembles and statistical mechanics [1, 2]. The number of occupancy configurations is reduced by taking advantage of the crystal symmetry of the lattice. Thermodynamics and non-thermodynamic properties are then defined from the statistics in the symmetry-adapted configurational ensemble. Europe/Rome The aim of this Workshop is to familiarize physicists, working in radiation dosimetry laboratories or lecturers teaching radiation dosimetry, with procedures and methodologies that should be utilized for the determination of uncertainties in medical radiation dosimetry. Contrary to earlier practice, when the terms error and uncertainty were used interchangeably, the modern approach distinguishes between these two concepts. Traditionally, an error has been viewed as having two components, namely a random component and a systematic component. According to present definitions, an error is the difference between a measured value and the true value. If errors were known exactly, the true value could be determined; in reality, errors are estimated in the best possible way and corrections are made for them. Therefore, after application of all known corrections, errors do not need any further consideration and the quantities of interest are uncertainties. An error has both a numerical value and a sign. In contrast, the uncertainty associated with a measurement is a parameter that characterizes the dispersion of the values “that could reasonably be attributed to the measurand”. This parameter is normally an estimated standard deviation. An uncertainty, therefore, has no known sign and is usually assumed to be symmetrical. It is “a measure” of our lack of exact knowledge, after all recognized systematic effects have been taken into count by applying appropriate corrections. Uncertainties of measurements are expressed as relative standard uncertainties and the evaluation of standard uncertainties is classified into type A and type B. The method of evaluation of type A standard uncertainties is by statistical analysis of a series of observations, whereas the method of evaluation of type B standard uncertainties is based on means other than statistical analysis of a series of observations. The IAEA, understanding the need to provide practical guidance on the estimation of measurement uncertainty in dosimetry, has incorporated a specific section on this topic in relevant publications on radiation dosimetry, such as the IAEA TRS-398 (Absorbed Dose Determination in External-Beam Radiotherapy An-International Code of Practice for Dosimetry Based on Standards of Absorbed dose toWater), IAEA TRS-454 (Quality Assurance for Radioactivity Measurement in Nuclear Medicine), IAEA TRS-457 (Dosimetry in Diagnostic Radiology: An International Code of Practice) and IAEA TEC DOC-1585 Measurement Uncertainty: A Practical Guide for Secondary-Standards Dosimetry Laboratories). The main aim of the school is to introduce young participants into these exciting topics and prepare them for the week long conference to follow the school. The first week on the activity is devoted to a school that will give an overview of recent developments and interrelations between geometry and dynamical systems, with a special focus on mathematical billiards and integrable systems. The school will provide a background in algebraic geometry, theory of measured foliations and flat surfaces, the discrete integrable systems, 2-2 correspondences, the QR T maps, and the mechanical background of the billiard systems. Europe/Rome Abstract: The notion of Poincaré rotation number for homeomorphisms of the unit circle is generalized to the case of homeomorphisms of a general compact abelian one–dimensional solenoidal group, which is also a one–dimensional foliated space; specifically, the theory is developed for the algebraic universal covering space of the circle (the adèle class group of the rationals). Poincaré’s dynamical classification theorem is also generalized to homeomorphisms of solenoids whose rotation element is an irrational element (i.e., monothetic generator) of the given group. Europe/Rome Abstract: I briefly present a thorough analysis of the electromagnetic response of strongly coupled neutral plasmas described by the gauge/gravity correspondence. The coupling of the external electromagnetic field with the tower of quasi-normal modes of the plasmas supports the presence of various electromagnetic modes with different properties. Among them we underline the existence of negative refraction with low dissipation for a transverse non-hydrodynamical mode. Previous hydrodynamical approaches have shown the ubiquitous character of negative refraction in charged plasmas and the absence thereof in neutral plasmas. The results I present here extend the analysis to neutral plasmas beyond the hydrodynamical regime. As an application of these new insights, I will succinctly discuss the case of the quark gluon plasma in the temperature dominated regime. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, is organizing a Conference on Non-Equilibrium Phenomena in Condensed Matter and String Theory, to be held in Trieste from 30 June to 4 July 2014. Small fluctuations of systems at equilibrium or weakly driven near equilibrium satisfy a universal relation known as the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which connects spontaneous fluctuations to the linear response. The search for similar relations for systems far from equilibrium has been an important problem for many years with applications in Condensed Matter and Atomic Molecular Optical systems, as well as ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at Large Hadron Collider. Presently, many important questions remain unanswered, such as identifying the relevant time scales for relaxation and thermalization, finding whether there is an equivalent of the KAM theorem for quantum systems, understanding the effect of disorder and driving, among others. Making progress on those questions will require a close collaboration between experimentalists and theorists, as well as a the exchange of ideas and approaches between different fields. This Conference will help catalyze interactions between the Condensed Matter/AMO physicists working on problems far from equilibrium with their counterparts in the High Energy physics community. It will also allow interested scientists to enter this exciting new area of research through a daily pedagogical talk. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

In the proposed school we plan to cover ground state density functional theory (OFT) as well as advanced techniques. OFT has become an important tool in the area of materials research, to understand properties of materials, to complement/understand experimental results, and design new materials. The school is divided into two weeks. Europe/Rome Isolated integrable quantum systems do not relax to a thermal state even locally due to the extra conserved quantities that they possess. The so-called Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) was proposed to capture the steady state of integrable systems, but it has not been put to a stringent test for genuinely interacting systems. In the talk I will review our work on the non-equilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, where we found that short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit deviate significantly from predictions based on the GGE hypothesis. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the quench action formalism based on exact overlaps, however, we find excellent agreement with the numerical data. I will show why this result can be considered as conclusive evidence for the failure of the GGE and I will discuss the possible implications of this finding. Namely, many biological systems appear to be critical (so that their dynamics can be classified into a handful of universal classes), or are described with high accuracy by surprisingly simple, phenomenological models. I will explore a handful of simple theoretical models inspired by these observations, suggesting plausible explanations for this emergence of coarse-grained simplicity from complex microscopic structures. At these scales, the Universe is filled with inhomogeneously distributed discrete structures (galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies), which perturb the background Friedmann model. Here, the mechanical approach is the most appropriate to describe the dynamics of the inhomogeneities which is defined, on the one hand, by gravitational potentials of inhomogeneities and, on the other hand, by the cosmological expansion of the Universe. Europe/Rome The Workshop will address fundamental aspects, recent advances, and applications of numerical and experimental methods in fluid dynamics. It will focus on advanced instrumentation, measurement concepts, and scientific fundamentals that enable new methods and applications of instrumentation in this field to train physicists, engineers and computer scientists from Latin-American and Caribbean countries. The scope of the course is to promote new experimental methods, instruments, measurement techniques, and data analysis routines for both laboratory and industrial applications as well as to coordinate international activities in this area. By focusing on theory and applications, the workshop will also provide an interesting intersection of emerging development of methods as well as a unique opportunity to learn about recent theoretical advances in the field including analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches. Europe/Rome Abstract: We introduce a signed count of real polynomials which gives rise to a real analog of Hurwitz numbers in the case of polynomials. The invariants obtained allow one to show the abundance of real solutions in the corresponding enumerative problems: in many cases, the number of real solutions is asymptotically equivalent (in the logarithmic scale) to the number of complex solutions. Europe/Rome The 10th edition of the School of Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM School) is jointly organized by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On top of recognizing a decade of successful cooperation between the IAEA the ICTP, 2014 will also mark ICTP’s 50th anniversary. PURPOSE - The School is a certificate course aiming to provide specialized education and training on development and implementation of knowledge management programmes in nuclear science and technology organizations. FOCUS - The School focuses on methodologies and practices, and explores various dimensions of NKM such as processes and tools, challenges and benefits, culture influence, relationship with human resource development, information technology for knowledge preservation and sharing, etc. Learning is supplemented with real life examples, good practices and lessons learned from NKM programmes in different types of nuclear organizations. The aim is to encourage ‘forward thinking’ and to make theory and insights directly applicable in the workplace. TOPICS - The main topics of the School are: • Nuclear Knowledge and Knowledge Management Fundamentals; • Developing Policies and Strategies in Managing Nuclear Knowledge; • Managing Nuclear Information Resources; • Human Resources Development, Risk of Knowledge Loss and Knowledge Transfer; • Practical Guidance and Best practices on NKM. LOCATION - The School will be taking place in Trieste, Italy at the ICTP premises. DURATION - 25th to 29th August 2014. DELIVERY METHODS – The School starts before going to Trieste, with a pre-training done via e-learning. This pre-training introduces applicants to the fundamentals of NKM, and ensures a common understanding of the basics, allowing a more efficient and valuable interaction with peers and lecturers during the face-to-face in-class training that follows. Once in ICTP, topics are introduced through presentations delivered by recognized experts, followed by case studies, practical and breakout sessions where the participants will have the opportunity to discuss issues and solutions. An NKM group project is also developed over the week. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE - The invitation to the School is extended to young professionals from the nuclear field that have - or may in the near future have – a lead role in managing nuclear knowledge. Experts and scientists from countries that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA may attend. Although the main purpose of the Centre is to help researchers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international co-operation, a limited number of participants from developed countries are also welcome. Due to organizational reasons, the total number of participants is limited. The School will be conducted in English therefore participants must have adequate language knowledge. SELECTION PROCEDURE - The selection procedure has two phases. The applicants are first screened based on their qualification, skills, abilities and experience. The pre-selected group will then undertake the online pre-training course (on an e-learning platform) and a test. Europe/Rome In this talk I'm going to present some of the experiments and projects that are currently active at the Universidad de Costa Rica in the area of nanoscience. In particular I'm going to mention some projects where the support of DFT and MD calculations will have a relevant impact in the interpretation and comprehension of present experimental results. In the second part, I'm going to focus on a specific project: "Ca-Co phosphates as catalysts in water electrolysis". This project aims to study the catalytic properties of Pakhomovskyite. Pakhomovskyite is a vivianite structure with layers of cobalt phosphate structures that are joined together by hydrogen bonds. This structure has been proposed for various cobalt based catalysts. The main advantage is that the structure can sustain changes in oxidation state while the same structure remains. The experimental results lead to important questions in water splitting catalysis. Nevertheless, none theoretical work has been done in this material. Therefore, in the present project we aim to use DFT calculations in order to study its magnetic and electronic properties, allowing us to select the best candidates to be synthesized later by the experimental group. Europe/Rome This two-week activity consists of a school on aspects of computational algebra and number theory with an emphasis on modular forms and L-functions in the first week and a more focused workshop on the same theme in the second week. The school is intended for advanced graduate students and young researchers. During the school there will be lectures on both theoretical and computational aspects of algebra and number theory, including a general introduction to scientific computing. The afternoons will be devoted to concrete hands-on computational projects. The workshop in the second week will also have a computational bent, being part of the research project LMF: L-functions and Modular Forms (a six year Programme Grant from EPSRC, grant reference EP/K034383/1). The High Performance Computing staff at ICTP will take part of the workshop with the goal of helping the interested participants make the jump from desktops to bigger machines. For this purpose: I shall firstly analyze a spin realization of the single channel Kondo model and show how one can determine the Kondo screening length by a measure of entanglement. I then show how the entanglement with the impurity “stored” in the Kondo cloud may be used to generate distance independent long range entanglement between the end point of a Kondo spin chain. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, is organizing an Advanced Workshop on "Interdisciplinary View in Chromosome Structure & Function", to be held in Trieste, Italy, from 15 - 19 September 2014. Understanding how the genetic material is organized in space in eukaryotes and bacteria is one of the big challenges of current molecular biology. It is now clear that the complexity of the cellular machinery is so profound that its full comprehension can be pursued only through the joint efforts of scientists coming from cross-related disciplines like molecular biology, systems biology, bioinformatics and physics. This Workshop aims at bringing scientists from these different disciplines in a real interdisciplinary context. The state-of-the-art of experimental, modeling and physical aspects in chromosome organization will be discussed, with particular emphasis on future important challenges. Topics include: -High-throughput and imaging methods for chromosome structure and dynamics; -Gene regulatory networks in eukaryotes and bacteria: experiments and modeling; - Large-scale physical modeling and simulation of chromosome structure; - System biology of gene expression and regulation. Europe/Rome Abstract. We hereby introduce and extensively study a class of non-polynomial higher derivative theories of gravity that realize a ultraviolet (UV) completion of Einstein general relativity. These theories are unitary (ghost free) and at most only one-loop divergences survive. The outcome is a class of theories super-renormalizable in even dimension and finite in odd dimension. Moreover, we explicitly prove in D=4 that there exists an extension of the theory that is completely finite and all the beta functions vanish even at one-loop. These results can be easily extended in extra dimensions and it is likely that the higher dimensional theory can be made finite too. The last years have witnessed fast growing developments in the use of quantum mechanics in technology-oriented and information-related fields, including metrology, nano-devices development, biophysics together with computation, communication and cryptography. Topics as quantum entanglement, quantum coherence and decohering phenomena both in microscopic and mesoscopic systems have been attracting the interest of a growing number of researchers, especially young ones from developing countries. Quantum Africa 3 is the third conference in the Quantum Africa series, which is held biennially in Africa. The Quantum Africa conference series aims to engender exchanges and collaborations between African countries and between Africa and the rest of the world, enable Africa to play a leading research and development role in quantum science and technology, raise African stakeholder awareness of opportunities. The Conference will cover the following topics: quantum biology, quantum control, quantum communication, quantum dynamics, quantum foundations, quantum information processing, quantum materials, quantum metrology, quantum optics, quantum spintronics and ultrafast phenomena. PARTICIPATION Application is open to all qualified participants from countries which are members of the UN, UNESCO and IAEA. The Organizers will select participants upon evaluation of the application forms, accessible through this webpage (see below link). As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by their home institutions. Some funds are available for a limited number of applicants who are nationals of, and working in, developing countries. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare from their home country. Such financial support is available only to those attending the entire Conference. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria) will jointly organize this Workshop to be held at the ICTP in Trieste from 22 to 26 September 2014. The Workshop will continue a long tradition of workshops on nuclear theory initiated in late sixties. The Workshop represents a unique forum where nuclear scientists and engineers can get extensive and up-to-date information on the whole 'know-how' of nuclear data, from the physics of nuclear reactions to the production and validation of evaluated nuclear data files. In the era of vanishing expertise and infrastructure due to low support for nuclear reactor activities, this type of training is important, particularly in view of challenges posed by emerging innovative fuel cycle concepts, enhanced safety requirements and radioactive waste incineration. The purpose of the Workshop is to train scientists and engineers from both developing and developed countries in modern nuclear reaction theory, nuclear data production and validation, and data use, with particular emphasis on applications in nuclear reactor physics, design and safety. Europe/Rome In this talk, based on a detailed symmetry analysis, I will state the general rules to build up the effective low energy field theory describing a system of electrons weakly interacting with the lattice degrees of freedom. The basic elements in the construction are the invariant tensors that keep track of the microscopic discrete symmetries into the coarse-grained action. The approach can be applied to lattice systems in arbitrary dimensions and in a systematic way to any desired order in derivatives. I will show the application of the method to the honeycomb lattice and re-obtain the well-known effective action for graphene, containing Dirac fermions coupled to a fictitious gauge field. Europe/Rome ChArMEx is part of the international and interdisciplinary metaprogramme MISTRALS (Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional and Local Scales). Its aim is to assess the present and future state of the atmospheric environment in the Mediterranean Basin, and its impacts on the regional climate, air quality and marine biogeochemistry, in a context of strong regional anthropogenic and climatic pressures. This region shows high level of ozone and aerosol during summertime. It is a receptor area of long-range transport of atmospheric pollution. It is also considered a hot-spot of climate change, with significant projected summertime warming and precipitation decrease that have the potential to further enhance atmospheric pollutants and natural aerosol concentrations. The Workshop will focus on different approaches to study Mediterranean atmospheric chemistry and climate such as satellite observations, airborne and ground measurements, and modelling. Recent results of the ChArMEx experiment will also be discussed. It is intended to promote scientific exchanges and collaborations between participants. As such it is open to scientists and students interested in atmospheric chemistry, aerosols and climate-chemistry interactions in the Mediterranean region climate. Talks from participants are welcome, and a Poster Session will also be included in the programme. Europe/Rome Since Paleolithic times, humans have tried to read biological behavior through animal and plant traces. Over the centuries, this art of survival has evolved into a discipline halfway between Earth Sciences and Life Sciences: Ichnology. This seminar discusses the fundamentals of the study of traces, presenting robust techniques to decipher the ichnological alphabet – from worm burrows to dinosaur footprints. Special attention will be paid to the application of quantitative techniques such as fractal geometry, network theory and artificial life. Fossil and modern environments will be explored, underlining the (paleo)biological significance of 600 millions of years of bioturbation in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Europe/Rome Introduction: Plasma-wall interaction in fusion devices encompasses a wide variety of processes. On a short timescale these include deposition of energetic plasma particles (primarily hydrogen and helium) into the surface, physical and chemical sputtering of surface material into the plasma, and reflection and desorption of particles from the surface. On a longer timescale the processes include diffusion of hydrogen and helium in the wall and changes in surface composition, morphology and material microstructure due to plasma bombardment and (in a reactor) neutron irradiation. Together these processes are extremely important in determining the plasma performance, the lifetime of plasma-facing components, trapping and retention of the tritium fusion fuel in the wall, and ultimately the feasibility of fusion power production. The gap between what is known about plasma-material interaction and what is needed to design a fusion reactor is most severe for the effects of radiation damage on hydrogen retention properties of plasma-facing materials. Computations are particularly important for this problem, because experiments cannot fully simulate the radiation conditions in a fusion device. Appropriate computational materials tools range from statistical or otherwise averaged (binary collision approximation, kinetic Monte Carlo) and mechanical (molecular dynamics) models to semiempirical (tight binding) density functional theory codes and first principles quantum mechanical codes for inhomogeneous materials. Any of these codes has its own needs for fundamental data, which are in many cases obtained by parameterization of results of other calculations. Purpose: The conference is intended to bring together researchers from the areas of fusion energy science and materials science in order to review advances in computational studies of plasma-material interaction processes and the evolution of material microstructure in fusion devices. Within this area the programme will emphasize work that is relevant to hydrogen (tritium) trapping and transport in candidate fusion reactor wall materials. This includes modelling of the effects of irradiation upon material microstructure and modelling to understand the influence of microstructure on hydrogen trapping and transport. Participants with a background in plasma-wall interaction in fusion experiments should return from the conference with a richer understanding of the wide range of computational methods that are used for development of plasma-material interaction data and material properties data for fusion plasma and fusion materials modelling. Participants from the area of materials science should obtain guidance about new work that is most needed to improve understanding of plasma-material interaction processes and material damage processes that are relevant for fusion energy development. The conference format is meant to encourage new collaborations on computational studies of plasma-material interaction in fusion devices. Topics: The conference programme will emphasize uses of the more fundamental computational tools (based on quantum mechanics) and parameterization of results from such tools in the form of interaction potentials and transition rates for applied studies. Specific topics include the following. * Direct uses of ab initio and semi-empirical quantum mechanical codes for study of materials microstructure, trapping and transport of hydrogen and helium in fusion wall materials. * Optimization of parameters in semi-empirical codes and parameterization of results of quantum mechanical calculations in the form of interaction potentials and transition rates for classical models. * Molecular Dynamics, Binary Collision Approximation and Kinetic Monte Carlo studies of plasma-material interaction, radiation damage processes and material and surface evolution. * Multi-method and multi-scale simulations; acceleration approaches. * Uncertainty estimation and uncertainty propagation from quantum mechanical calculations through interaction potentials to outputs of longer time-scale calculations. * Parameterization of material microstructure and its effect on mobility and trapping of hydrogen and helium in fusion wall materials. * Simulation and interpretation of diagnostics of material microstructure, radiation damage, hydrogen and helium in fusion materials and plasma-material interaction Participants will be active researchers in the subject area of the conference and we expect a scientific contribution (talk or poster) from each participant. Europe/Rome Who are the most influential players in a social network? What's the origin of an epidemic outbreak? The answer to simple questions like these can hide incredibly difficult computational problems, that require powerful methods for the inference, optimization, and control of dynamical processes on large networks. I will present a statistical mechanics approach to inverse dynamical problems in the idealized framework provided by simple models of irreversible contagion and diffusion on networks (linear threshold model, susceptible-infected-removed epidemic model). Using the cavity method (belief propagation), it is possible to explore the large-deviation properties of the dynamics and develop efficient message-passing algorithms to solve optimization and inference problems even on large networks. Europe/Rome Mexico and Central America are vulnerable regions to extreme climatic events that causes socio-economical and natural disasters. Central America is a hot spot for climate change impact (Giorgi, 2006), being one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change. Recent simulations performed with RegCM, contributing to the Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) over Central America have shown that the use of regional climate models allows for a better representation of the local climate features and meso-scale phenomena, such as for example tropical cyclones compared with coarser resolution Global Models. Therefore, the main purpose of the workshop will be to provide extensive sessions focused on the implementation of techniques to carry out analysis of climate variability and climatic change in this area. The use of the regional climate model RegCM4 model will be shown as a tool to study climate-related phenomena at high resolution. This workshop will be organized with lectures and lab sessions which intend to provide a background on climate studies focused over Central America and Mexico, addressing issues like theory of regionaI climate dynamics and climatic change. One aim of the workshop is to start a community of users of Regional Climate Modeler focused over Mexico and Central America inline with the CORDEX framework. A limited number of participants is envisioned, with proven experience in handling climate data, and that have interest in starting to use the RegCM4 as a tool for regional climate studies. Europe/Rome ABSTRACT We investigate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in integrable models, focusing on the spin-1/2 isotropic Heisenberg (XXX) chain. We verify that ETH holds for typical eigenstates (weak ETH scenario). Specifically, using a numerical implementation of state-of-the-art Bethe ansatz results, we study the finite-size scaling of the eigenstate-to-eigenstate fluctuations of the reduced density matrix. Fluctuations are normally distributed, and their standard deviation decays in the thermodynamic limit as L^{-1/2}, with L the size of the chain. This is in contrast with the exponential decay that is found in generic non-integrable systems. Finally, we investigate the entanglement properties of the excited states of the XXX chain. I'll explain how generalizing this in a certain way to some infinite dimensional Kac-Moody requires that certain limits be switched for some infinite-dimensional varieties, together with an idea of Graeme Segal, and give some new sufficient conditions for when this may be done. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is organizing, in collaboration with the Pakistani National Centre for Physics (NCP), a School on LHC Physics to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan from 25 August to 5 September 2014. INTRODUCTION The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest particle accelerator ever built in the history in terms of energy and luminosity. LHC is currently under operation at European Organization for Nuclear Physics (CERN), Geneva. The discovery of the Higgs Boson was announced by two big LHC experiments called CMS and ATLAS on July 4, 2012. PURPOSE The purpose of this School is to introduce young researchers in particular graduate students how to analyze the data from LHC. Several countries in the region are working on LHC such as: China, India, Iran, Malaysia, Turkey and Pakistan. This particular School is organized in the same spirit as the CMS Data Analysis Schools (CMSDAS) organized on regular basis by CERN and Fermilab. The School will serve the purpose of regional school. TOPICS The real goal of the School is “from raw data to physics publication”. During the School we plan to cover the following areas: •Standard Model and Beyond •Higgs Searches and Searches for Exotic Particles •Detector Physics •Event Generator •Analysis tools for LHC data Supplementary lectures related to various programming tools needed to analyze LHC data will cover •Operating System (Linux)/Programming Languages (C++, Python, Perl) •Root/Event Generator – Pythia •CMSSW •Data Access using Grid •Statistical Techniques and Fitting data using Roofit FORMAT The two-week school will consist of morning sessions devoted to inspirational plenary talks combined with the execution of a series of so-called "short" and "long exercises" that will represent the main goal of the School. The first part of the School will be devoted to "short exercises" (several hours duration) to cover all of the objects from jets to muons, as well as various techniques from event generators to setting upper limits. During a 2.5 days intensive session, focused teams of about 6-8 students each, will perform "long exercises", i. e. detailed physics measurements using LHC data. Both short and long exercises will be designed and facilitated by teams of 2-3 experts. Some long exercises go beyond the current state of the art of the corresponding CMS analysis PARTICIPATION Scientists and students from all countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA, may attend the School, however, since this is a regional activity, priority will be given to graduate researchers and research scientists from the region. As the School will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. Although the main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation, a limited number of students from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As a rule travel and subsistence expenses for participants should be borne by their home Institutions. Every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare (or at least half fare). However, limited funds are available for some participants who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country, and who are not more than 45 years old. Europe/Rome Abstract. I will discuss the physics of dark matter models featuring composite bound states carrying a large conserved dark "nucleon" number. The properties of sufficiently large dark nuclei may obey simple scaling laws, and we find that this scaling can determine the number distribution of nuclei resulting from Big Bang Dark Nucleosynthesis. For plausible models of asymmetric dark matter, dark nuclei of large nucleon number, e.g. > 10^8, are synthesised, with the number distribution taking one of two characteristic forms, independent of many details of the initial conditions and small-number interactions. I will also briefly discuss the constraints arising from the novel dark sector energetics, possible modifications to astrophysical processes, and the potential direct detection signals. Europe/Rome The aim of this course is to provide advanced knowledge to meet the increasing need of radiation protection and safety of patients undergoing radiotherapy procedures. The course will: - disseminate information on lessons learned from radiotherapy incidents and accidents that have occurred in the past - train participants in the critical aspects of radiotherapy safety learning and implementation - train participants in methods for retrospective and prospective risk analysis in radiotherapy Radiotherapy has long been an effective way of treating cancer and it is estimated that 50-60% of patients with cancer would benefit from radiotherapy. Expanding radiotherapy into areas with limited current access has the potential to save a great number of lives, but it is mandatory that the expansion is done with safety in mind, considering the complexity of this high-technology treatment modality and the potential for serious consequences when something goes wrong. It is worth considering that there have been more deaths and early acute health effects due to radiation accidents in medical uses than due to any other source, including accidents at nuclear facilities. While there is a broad agreement by experts that radiotherapy is a very safe form of treatment, where more than 5 million treatments are delivered annually in the world, there is also recognition that safety measures need to be further progressed at several levels for this complex and rapidly developing medical specialty. The need to develop leadership in radiation safety in radiotherapy is acute. ICTP is a world renowned centre for training in physics and allied sciences and IAEA has developed lead in medical radiation protection. A program under the umbrella of both these organizations is expected to attract right talent and has potential to meet objectives of both organizations effectively. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Europe/Rome Systems with disparate timescales are ubiquitous in physics and biology. Efficient modeling dictates to restrict the description to the slower processes and not to fully resolve the faster ones. The seminar will discuss this general issue in stochastic systems with multiple timescales. In particular, the presentation will address the behavior of thermodynamics upon changing the level of resolution. Stefano Bo will show how for non-equilibrium systems, under quite general conditions, properties of the fast dynamics still affect thermodynamics on the slower scales therefore compromising a description of the full system in terms of slow variables only. Europe/Rome Abstract: Many complex systems respond to a continuous input of energy by an accumulation of stress over time, interrupted by sudden energy releases called avalanches. Recently, it has been pointed out that several basic features of avalanche dynamics are induced at the microscopic level by relaxation processes, which are neglected by most models. We have studied a minimal modification of a well-known model of avalanche dynamics, in which we take into account the presence of "relaxation processes". Precisely, we study a viscoelastic interface driven in a disordered medium. In mean-field, we prove that our model interface has a periodic behavior (with a new, emerging time scale), with avalanche events that span the whole system. We compute semi-analytically the friction force acting on this surface, and find that it is compatible with classical friction experiments. In finite dimensions (2D), the mean-field system-sized events become local, and numerical simulations give qualitative and quantitative results in good agreement with several important features of real earthquakes. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, is organizing a Winter School on Quantitative Systems Biology from 1 to 12 December 2014. It will be directed by V. Balasubramanian (Univ. of Pennsylvania, USA and CUNY Graduate Center, USA) and A. Treves (SISSA, Italy). The School is part of the Programme in Biology between ICTP and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bangalore, India. New experimental techniques are opening windows on biological mechanisms inside the cell and in the brain, making these systems accessible to quantitative investigation. These advances have shown the importance of the concerted interaction of many agents in producing overall behaviors, and call for an understanding of biological functions at the systemic level. The series of Winter Schools in Quantitative Systems Biology, initiated in 2012, responds to the need to provide physicists with a broad exposure to quantitative problems in the study of living systems. The school is particularly targeted to young researchers, especially at the Ph.D and postdoc level who either work in this area or hope to do so. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Italy) and the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC, Costa Rica) will jointly organize a Latin-American FPGA School on Advanced Instrumentation, to be held in Santa Clara, Costa Rica, from 1 to 19 December 2014. The last three days of the school will be dedicated to the first regional Conference on Advanced Instrumentation (CRIA 2014) to be also held at Costa Rica TEC from 17 to 19 December 2014. Specific information about the Conference can be found a at http://cria2014.instrumentacionavanzada.net/ PURPOSE OF THE SCHOOL The aim of school is to introduce physicists, engineers, computer scientists and other scientists to FPGA design methodologies focusing applications in scientific instrumentation. The school will represent a unique opportunity for many of the participants to gain skills for designing and developing complete high performance systems for scientific applications at low cost. Since the main barrier to exploit this technology is knowledge, this school will contribute to generate know how through hands-on experimental activities with state of the art hardware and software. The participants will count on international highly qualified lecturers and laboratory assistants who are selected professionals from academy, research centers and industry. This will contribute to provide a balanced perception and deeper understanding about limitations, trends and potentialities of this key technology. The School will contain about 35 hours of lectures and 35 hours of tutorials and assisted hands on laboratory sessions. During the last three days of the school, the selected applicants will also participate to the first regional conference on advanced instrumentation (CRIA 2014). It is expected to enhance the capabilities of researchers, teachers, and engineers in exploiting cost-effective programmable logic devices for their instrumentation needs and R&D for scientific and academic purposes. Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy, in collaboration with the University of Buenos Aires, CLIVAR, and CONICET, is organizing a Workshop on "South Atlantic Circulation Variability and Change: Integrating Models and Observations" to be held from December 1-5, 2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. VENUE Fundación Pablo Cassará, Avenida de Mayo 1194, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires OBJECTIVES The workshop will bring together theoreticians, modelers and observationalists interested in the South Atlantic Ocean region and its interactions with other basins. The activity has a strong training component intended for students and young researchers from South American countries. Participants will have the opportunity to be in contact with experts from the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (SAMOC) community and other researchers that have an interest in the region and its effects on global circulation. The workshop will convey state-of-the-science knowledge and understanding of the subject, leading participants to improvements in their research, knowledge transfer and developing new professional links. STRUCTURE Day 1 and 2: Teaching seminars, oriented to advanced students and young researchers, on the Meridional Overturning Circulation and general ocean circulation in the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic: Modelling, Observations and Theory. Topics will include: - The South Atlantic Circulation -Modelling the Coastal and Regional Circulation in the South Atlantic - The Southern Ocean and global implications - Observations in the South Atlantic Day3: Presentations on South Atlantic general topics. Europe/Rome Abstract: A mechanism to generate flavour hierarchy via 5-dimensional wave-function localization is revisited in the context of an SO(10) grand unified theory. An extra-dimension compactified on an orbifold generates different zero-mode profiles for fermions of different charges. Utilizing suitable scalar fields, a predictive model for fermion masses and mixing is constructed and shown to be viable with the current data. All the Yukawa couplings in the model are of order unity while the hierarchies among different fermions result from the wave-function profiles. The naturalness of anarchical Yukawa couplings and predictions for various observables in the lepton sector will be discussed. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Building Brains: Establishing Neuroscience Research Infrastructure in the Developing World

Europe/Rome Abstract: We consider genus one fibrations for F-theory, with their fibers realized as hypersurfaces in the toric varieties associated to the 16 reflexive 2D polyhedra. For all of these we determine the gauge groups, matter representations, 6D matter multiplicities and 4D Yukawa couplings of their corresponding effective theories in a base independent way. We also explore the network of Higgsings relating these theories. Geometrically, such Higgsings correspond to extremal transitions induced by blow-ups in the 2D toric varieties. We recover the 6D effective theories of all 16 toric hypersurface fibrations upon successive Higgsings from the thee theories that exhibit Mordell-Weil torsion. We find that the three Calabi-Yau manifolds without section, whose fibers are given by the toric hypersurfaces in P^2, P^1x P^1 and the recently studied P^2(1,1,2), yield F-theory realizations of SUGRA theories with discrete gauge groups Z_3, Z_2 and Z_4. In these three manifolds, we also find codimension two I_2-fibers supporting matter charged only under these discrete gauge groups. This opens up a whole new arena for model building with discrete global symmetries in F-theory. ICTP ICTP pio@ictp.it

Europe/Rome The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy), is organizing an Advanced Workshop on Structural Biology: using Synchrotron Radiation to Visualise Biological Molecules to be held at the ICTP from 15 -19 December 2014. The objective of this Workshop is to expose the participants to the methodologies used to solve macromolecular structures, using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques. Structural biology is an interdisciplinary research area, requiring expertises from both the life sciences and the physical sciences, so it is often difficult to educate and train young scientists with the necessary breath of experience. The Workshop is meant to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the fields of macromolecular crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering, and aims to bridge the gap between physics and biology by covering the entire process, starting from the gene to obtain the atomic structure. A few practical sessions will provide the students with some hands-on experience in some of the subjects covered by the lectures. This event is part of a joint initiative between ICTP, IAEA, Elettra and SESAME, the Middle East Synchrotron Radiation facility in Jordan. Topics will include: Protein production; Crystallization; MX data collection and processing; MX structure determination; Refinement; Model building; Hands-on sessions will include: Crystallization; Synchrotron data collection; Data processing; Refinement & Model building.
