OWSD organises workshops for women scientists in developing countries.

Organization for Women in Science
for the Developing World

OWSD is the first international forum to unite eminent women scientists from the developing and developed worlds with the objective of strengthening their role in the development process and promoting their representation in scientific and technological leadership.

Career Development

1. Membership

Full Membership is open to women scientists or technologists who have completed a master-degree or higher in the sciences, engineering or related fields and who are committed to the objectives of the Organization, from the developing and developed worlds. Currently there are over 4,000 members.

2. Fellowship

Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences.

3. Workshop

A training workshop is a type of interactive training where participants carry out a number of training activities rather than passively listen to a lecture or presentation. Broadly, two types of workshops exist: A general workshop is put on for a mixed audience, and a closed workshop is tailored towards meeting the training needs of a specific group.

4. Awards

OWSD Prizes recognize women scientists working and living in developing countries who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge. OWSD currently has one award scheme which it offers in collaboration with the Elsevier Foundation and TWAS.

5. Beyond OWSD

OWSD provides a series of opportunities for women scientists from the developing world, including networking for OWSD members; PhD fellowships for successful applicants and an award scheme for established researchers.
