International Day of Women and Girls in Science

2018 events at ICTP

The Trieste ICTP community was invited to attend the 2018 International Day of Women and Girls in Science events happening during the week of 5 February at ICTP and in downtown Trieste. The International Day, which is officially celebrated on 11 February, puts a spotlight on the challenges and opportunities for women scientists, and asks the question: why are there fewer women than men in science? This year ICTP, together with OWSD and SISSA, organized two public events and one event for secondary-school students:

Wednesday, 7 February, 18:00 to 19:30, Caffé San Marco: ICTP, OWSD and SISSA hosted a discussion on the challenges facing women in science and the barriers that still prevent full participation and access, with specific focus on the environment in Trieste. Representatives of Trieste scientific institutions were present. Tonya Blowers of OWSD moderated the event. More details are here: https://www.facebook.com/events/114355162666310/

Friday, 9 February, 10:00 to 14:00, ICTP Reading Room (next to bar), Leonardo Building: visit an exhibit of statistics, success stories, and strategies regarding women in science. Cookies, stickers, and a mad scientist-themed carnevale photo booth await!

Friday, 9 February, 10:00 to 11:00, Luigi Stasi Seminar Room: Secondary-school students met with ICTP and SISSA post-docs, who described why they are scientists and what they do day to day, in addition to answering students’ questions about challenges and opportunities in science careers.
