The UNESCO flagship publication "World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: Global Report 2017/2018" offers a critical examination of global trends in media freedom, pluralism, independence and journalists’ safety, with a special focus on gender equality in the media. The Report highlights key changes in the media landscape and the challenges that these have brought, such as an increase in cyber harassment and hate speech, the spread of unverified ‘fake news’ and continuing threats to journalists’ physical and digital safety.
This event, held alongside the CI Commission of the General Conference, will feature a presentation of the main findings of the Report and a panel of experts to provide unique insight into specific trends. The session aims to highlight the Report’s findings to Member States as part of UNESCO’s continued efforts to promote and defend freedom of expression.
