Matrix sampling design

Definition

Process by which different subsets of test items are administered to different subsets of respondents, in a way that each item is administered to at least one subset of the sample of respondents. Generally, there are important items called ‘core’ that are administered to all respondents, as opposed to ‘split’ items that are only administered to a subset of respondents. In general, core items are predictive of many of the split items of the test.
