International Ministerial Meeting on Education Sector Responses to Homophobic Violence

Many students around the world are routinely denied the basic universal human right to education because of the discrimination and violence including bullying they experience in educational institutions, on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity.

From 17-18 May 2016 UNESCO will be organizing an International Ministerial Meeting on Education Sector Responses to Homophobic Violence. The meeting will bring together high-level representation from a significant number of countries including Ministers of Education and other Ministers to: affirm their political commitment to ensure the right to education in a safe and healthy learning environment for all learners, including LGBT children and young people, and in general those perceived as non-conforming to existing gender norms; and discuss how to strengthen and scale up evidence-based national education sector responses to discrimination and violence, including homophobic and transphobic discrimination and violence including bullying.
