This year, the focus of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) young people.
In 2011, Thailand voted for a UN Resolution on combating all forms of discrimination and violence against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Recent policy developments, such as the Gender Equality Bill and the 2012 Social Welfare Act, have also given broader attention in Thailand to equality and sexual diversity, particularly for transgender people. These positive developments recognise and affirm that LGBTI persons in Thailand can fully participate in all aspects of public life, and are entitled to claim their human rights, which is especially important for young people.
The National Institute of Educational Development (NIED) in partnership with UNESCO and UNICEF is rolling out training of Life Skills Teachers on revised Life skills curriculum including HIV and Sexuality Education for Grades 4 -7. The training which started in March 2015 will run through to November 2015. At least 500 Life skills teachers are expected to be reached.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), UNESCO Bangkok and many partners will light up the façade of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre with a massive rainbow-coloured display to commemorate this year’s International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT).
This discussion paper was prepared by UNESCO for the global consultation on education sector responses to early and unintended pregnancy (EUP) held in Johannesburg in November 2014. The paper describes global and regional specificities of EUP, the causes behind it, and the implications for the education sector, highlighting the current status of the education sector response and examples of ongoing programs and initiatives aimed at preventing EUP through comprehensive sexuality education and ensuring the right to education for pregnant and parenting girls.
