The focus of this study was on the impact of menstruation and menstrual hygiene management on girl learners in schools in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Issues related to cultural practices, teachings about menstruation, access to sanitary supplies necessary during menstruation and to sanitation, as well as psychological trauma, particularly at menarche (the time of their first menstruation), were looked at. The study also attempted to capture the feelings and experiences of learners and their knowledge at menarche.
This report is the result of youth-led assessments and observations that were run in 21 schools around the country from June to September 2016 to note and subsequently share the beneficiaries’ perspectives at implementation level of the challenges and successes around East and South Africa comprehensive sexuality education (ESA-CSE) including their suggested solutions and recommendations for improvement. An emerging model for sexuality education is the rights-based approach, which unifies discussions of sexuality, gender norms, and sexual rights to promote the healthy sexual development of adolescents. A rigorous evaluation of a rights-based intervention for a broad population of adolescents in the U.S. has not previously been published. This paper evaluates the immediate effects of the Sexuality Education Initiative (SEI) on hypothesized psychosocial determinants of sexual behavior.
International policy agreements, along with emerging evidence about factors influencing programme effectiveness, have led to calls for a shift in sexuality education toward an approach that places gender norms and human rights at its heart. Little documentation exists, however, about the degree to which this shift is actually taking place on the ground or what it entails. Field experiences in using new curriculum tools, such as It's All One, offer one lens onto these questions. Community Based Rehabilitation Network Ethiopia (CBRNE) and Light for the World partnered together to learn how best to provide CBR professionals, service providers and parents the skills they need to reach, teach, inform and discuss with girls with intellectual disabilities about sexuality.
