    The working paper presents data on the coverage of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in primary schools gathered from 149 countries for the period 2008-2013. It also compares current national WASH in Schools (WinS) monitoring indicators against global guidelines. It aims to promote and support improved monitoring of WinS so that coverage indicators can be included in the forthcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  10. Measuring the education sector response to HIV and AIDS. Handbook - Supporting country-level data collection for core indicators

    The purpose of this Handbook is to provide Ministries of Education with guidelines for strengthening data collection capacities in EMIS to produce the 11 core indicators for which data are collected through the education sector. Specifically, it provides the EMIS and key stakeholders responsible for collecting data and constructing the core indicators on education and HIV and AIDS with the following guidelines and tools for: the inclusion of ten selected core indicators in the Annual School Census; and the inclusion of three core indicators in school-based surveys.

  11. Literature review on the intersection of safe learning environments and educational achievement

    A safe school is one that is free of danger and possible harm for students, but in reality, violence in schools is a global phenomenon. Moreover, studies in developing countries indicate that school violence is especially prevalent in such settings. For example, more than half of South African and Botswanan children say they are bullied “approximately weekly.” Despite considerable progress in documenting and conceptualizing school violence, surprisingly few studies in any part of the world have examined its impact on educational achievement. …
