  2. Radio script for drug and substance abuse (Level 3 : Title of programme: drug and substance abuse among youth in Kenya

The radio script is a departure from the usual kind of radio lessons in the life-skills programme. Here in a panel discussion, a team of people, including four young people and a medical expert, are brought together to discuss the various issues that form the themes of this material. The script can be used at all three levels, although you will want to emphasise different aspects of it at each level. It focuses on drug abuse, alcohol abuse and the effects of peer pressure. …

  4. Knowing about puberty for boys

UNESCO in partnership with Ministry of Education Kenya and with financial support from the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, community and Civil society organizations implemented a two year Health Literacy and Behaviour Change practices among Adolescent Girls pilot project from September 2014-September 2017 in 41 schools. 5. Probing the politics of comprehensive sexuality education: ‘Universality’ versus ‘Cultural Sensitivity’: a Dutch–Bangladeshi collaboration on adolescent sexuality education

As part of Western European development aid policy, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is increasingly promoted in resource-poor countries. This paper engages with CSE promotion in Bangladesh funded by the Dutch Government. It unpacks the ‘collaboration’ by looking at how a paradox is played out between the universal ideals underlying a broader transnational rights-approach and the intended cultural sensitivity by adapting CSE to the targeted context. …

  6. Addressing gender-based violence in the post-school education and training sector: draft policy and strategy framework

High levels of violence, shaped by a range of highly unequal social relations, have been a prominent feature of South Africa both historically, as well as post-democracy. However, this violence has not affected all equally. Women have been more likely than men to be held responsible for much of the violence inflicted upon them which has also not historically been regarded as criminal, or provided with effective legal remedies. This lack of legal and political recognition of violence towards women was addressed relatively soon following the first democratic elections in 1994. …

  7. Policy outcome and challenges of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Ghana: what is the role of parliament?

While considerable progress has been made in the development of policies, legislations and outcome, significant gaps in ensuring universal access to reproductive health and rights still remain. The inconsistency in the Children's Act which stipulates the marriage age at 18 and the Criminal Code which also specifies the legal age of consent regarding sex at age 16 may be a reflection of the increasing numbers of early pregnancies, infant and child mortalities, and high prevalence of HIV among girls and women among others. …

  8. Desarrollo humano en República Dominicana: el embarazo en adolescentes: un desafío multidimensional para generar oportunidades en el ciclo de vida

Teenage pregnancy in the Dominican Republic is a complex problem and of high concern to the national agenda. Available data indicate that 22% of women between 12-19 years have been pregnant. This rate is 34% higher than the average for Latin America and the Caribbean. Teenage pregnancy is concentrated in specific areas of the country – the southern provinces and central Cibao - as well as among poorer people. The fact that the indicator (adolescent fertility rate) has shown little variation in the last three decades makes the picture complex. …

  9. Menarche and its implications for educational policy in Peru

Indigenous girls in rural areas live in the most extreme poverty and make up the least educated groups in Peru. These girls face numerous constraints to obtaining an education. Enrollment rates are lower for girls in rural areas, and their grade repetition rates are higher than those for boys. Adolescence is particularly difficult, as girls face a number of risks during this time. Once they begin menstruation, completing their primary school education is a formidable challenge, and opportunities for advancing to secondary school are limited. …

  10. Physical health and well-being in children and youth

This paper provides an overview of trends in physical health outcomes of young people over the last several decades. It makes the argument for the importance of physical health and well-being for the individual and society, including its role in education outcomes. The paper then examines interventions, identifying common factors of effective intervention design to improve physical health among young people. It ends with a discussion of remaining gaps in our knowledge and the implications of this body of research on education, communities and families.

  12. Association between literacy and self-rated poor health in 33 high-and upper-middle-income countries

We assess the relationship between general literacy skills and health status by analysing data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), an international survey of about 250 000 adults aged 16-65 years conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2011-15 in 33 countries/national sub-regions. Across countries, there seems to be a strong and consistent association between general literacy proficiency and self-rated poor health, independent of prior socio-economic status and income. …

  13. Towards ending AIDS in Sri Lanka: national communication strategy (2018-2021)

The stakeholders in the National AIDS Committee have all come together with the understanding that a widespread plan for communication is the best way forward for ending AIDS by 2025. The strategy will also help mitigate gaps still prevailing within the current intervention programs, especially in reaching populations around the country with prevention information, sexual health education and sufficient awareness on the basics of HIV/AIDS/STIs along with available services. …

  14. Examination of substance use, risk factors, and protective factors on student academic test score performance

School administrators and teachers face difficult decisions about how best to use school resources in order to meet academic achievement goals. Many are hesitant to adopt prevention curricula that are not focused directly on academic achievement. Yet, some have hypothesized that prevention curricula can remove barriers to learning and, thus, promote achievement. This study examined relationships between school levels of student substance use and risk and protective factors that predict adolescent problem behaviors and achievement test performance in Washington State.
