  1. Young people's sexual health in South Africa: HIV prevalence and sexual behaviors from a nationally representative household surevy

    Objectives: To determine the prevalence of HIV infection, HIV risk factors, and exposure to national HIV prevention programs, and to identify factors associated with HIV infection among South African youth, aged 15–24 years. Design: A cross-sectional, nationally representative, household survey. Methods: From March to August 2003 we conducted a national survey of HIV prevalence and sexual behavior among 11 904 15–24 year olds.   2. Addressing sexual violence and HIV risk among married adolescent girls in rural Nyanza, Kenya

    HIV infection is much higher among adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa than among boys. In settings such as Nyanza Province, Kenya, rates of HIV infection are extremely high, and evidence is increasing in some settings that girls who are married are much more likely to be infected with HIV, compared with their unmarried sexually active counterparts. This brief describes a program addressing the problem of sexual violence and the risk of HIV transmission within marriage in Kenya's Nyanza Province. …

  3. Children's access to information on behaviour change, sexuality and reproductive rights: a myth or reality

    The overall objective of this baseline survey was to help determine access to information on 1) HIV and AIDS prevention; 2) sexuality and 3) reproductive rights for in-school childre. The specific objectives were to: document existing behaviour change communication (BCC) materials and programs for children; document the BCC methods to children including the packaging of information and dissemination; establish the relevance of BCC materials to children; compile empirical evidence on the impact of BCC materials on children in Swaziland.

  4. Addressing HIV and AIDS stigma in Jamaica: Lessons learned from a community based sensitization programme

    Many challenges have been encountered in the response to HIV and AIDS, not the least of which is the impact of stigma on the lives of people infected as well as those otherwise affected. We recognize that a multi-pronged approach is necessary in any effort to combat this disease and propose that explicit sensitization training and anti-stigma measures are a critical component of any successful HIV&AIDS; education or elimination program.   9. South African national HIV prevalence, incidence, behaviour and communication survey, 2008. A turning tide among teenagers

    South Africa's first national, household sero-prevalence survey of HIV and AIDS was conducted in 2002. A second survey was completed in 2005 and this, the third, in 2008. This report provides an analysis of trends across the three surveys and begins to map the ways in which the shape of the pandemic in South Africa has changed since 2002. Indicators for assessing mid-term progress made in implementing South Africa's National Strategic Plan on HIV and AIDS, 2007-2011 are also provided. …

    This study is an article extracted from "Studies in family Planning" published in December 2008. It draws upon data from the 2002 Cameroon Adolescent Reproductive Health Survey to analyse the determinants of young women's perceived ability to refuse sex in urban Cameroon. Young women's status characteristics predict their vulnerability differently under different circumstances, and young women report having a lower ability to refuse sex in their relationships with men in positions of power over them. …
