This review considers out-of-school youth, a category typically eluding interventions that are school-based. Our review of descriptive studies concentrates on the most affected region, Southern and Eastern Africa, and spans the period between 2000 and 2010. …
This research paper is the first step towards developing a tailor-made, focused intervention on HIV/AIDS for indirect sex workers in Phnom Penh, using the structure of their formal entertainment sector workplaces. While this research does not provide a framework for interventions at all entertainment venues in Phnom Penh where sex work occurs, it does pinpoint where HIV workplace education is most needed, what sorts of approaches will most likely be effective and where it will have the biggest impact within the context of the recent financial crisis.
The AIDS pandemic has created an estimated 15 million orphans who may face elevated risk of poor health and social outcomes. This paper compares orphans and non-orphans regarding educational status and delay using data collected in three low-income communities affected by AIDS in Tanzania and Burkina Faso. Orphans were significantly more likely not to attend school than were non-orphans and also to be delayed when in school, though, after controlling for confounders, the risk was borderline and non-significant. …
Fassil Nebyeleul was a 21-year-old university student when AIDS claimed one of his best friends. The death shocked Fassil and his mates. They had never imagined that HIV could hit so close to home. But they knew the behavior that had led to their friend's death was no different from their own. "We decided that we were all HIV-positive and calculated our time of death as four or five years," Fassil said. "So we said, let us do something before our lives are gone." Increasing adult mortality due to AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa raises considerable concerns about the welfare of surviving children.
