Despite the multiple linkages between HIV/AIDS spread and the high prevalence rates of GBV through the world there have been very few programmatic efforts at the policy level to address these issues conjointly. For this reason, UNESCO has organized a workshop in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania to be held in July 2013. The workshop intended to address the linkages between GBV and HIV/AIDS in the Great Lakes region (including attention to situations of conflict and post-conflict), and to provide concrete policy recommendations for integrating national responses to both pandemics. …
This report summarizes findings and recommendations of a year-long exercise undertaken by the Women’s Refugee Commission and Save the Children - in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to map existing adolescent sexual and reproductive health programs and document good practices. The work was accomplished through a practitioner survey and humanitarian funding analyses; key informant interviews; and collection of good practice case studies.

This paper presents findings of a feasibility study to adapt and evaluate the impact of an evidence-based HIV prevention intervention on sexual risk behaviors of in-school 6th grade youth in post-conflict Liberia (n = 812). The study used an attention-matched, group randomized controlled trial. Four matched pairs of elementary/middle schools in Monrovia, Liberia, were randomly assigned to either an adapted eight-module HIV prevention or a general health curriculum. Three- and nine-month impacts of the intervention on sexual risk behaviors and on mediating variables are presented. …
This report reviews recent Women’s Refugee Commission sexual and reproductive health activities (SRH) in Haiti, Uganda and South Sudan. It considers the impact of advocacy, training and planning activities related to emergency preparedness and planning specific to SRH. The report then offers lessons learned and recommendations for improving steps towards SRH emergency preparedness at the national level. …

Within this report, we outline what is generally known about HIV/AIDS and the influence of conflict on the disease. We then discuss the first systematic effort to explore the relationship as well as some limitations with this analysis, prompting the current investigation. Following this, we present our general argument, the data and the research design that we use to explore it. Faith based communities (FBCs) provide 40% to 50% of healthcare in developing countries (African Religious Health Assets Programme, 2006). One in five organisations working on HIV programmes are faith-based (World Health, 2004). While their role in responding to HIV is recognised, FBCs have unexploited capacity for the delivery of HIV prevention, treatment and care. This is partly because some humanitarian organisations do not value the role of FBCs. Concerns include fears that funds are awarded on the basis of ideology rather than the effective delivery of health services. …

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate, by focusing on the case of Zimbabwe, how HIV/AIDS operates simultaneously across various domains-demographic, economic, and governance-to destabilize states and threaten their national security. Given the complex mix of factors that are contributing to Zimbabwe's current malaise (political corruption, a land distribution crisis, and an enduring drought), it is perhaps best to think of the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a powerful "stressor" that is exerting a significant negative influence on the nation's economic health and political stability. …
