IPPF’s comprehensive response to HIV is situated within a wider sexual and reproductive health framework. It links prevention with treatment, care and support; reduces HIV-related stigma and discrimination; and responds to the unique regional and national characteristics of the HIV epidemic. These real-life testimonies highlight how our work – shaped and pioneered by the efforts of thousands of committed staff, volunteers and partners – makes the vital links between HIV, sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV have been widely documented, and have extended their impact into the workplace. Stigmatising attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the workplace significantly hinder HIV prevention efforts and indirectly affect national development. Due in part to U.S. assistance on the policy front, the Vietnamese National Assembly enacted a more progressive, health- and rights-oriented national law regarding HIV/AIDS in mid-2006. Significantly, the new law officially endorses an array of specific HIV prevention activities for groups with high-risk behaviors. Ultimately, the policy environment in which donors and NGOs operate appears to be improving dramatically and holds promise for managing the epidemic as long as there is improved coordination among all actors.
Learning About Healthy Living - An Activity Manual for Outreach Workers is a document developed by Family Health International in Lao PDR and funded by USAID in 2007. The LRHS 2000, funded by UNFPA was undertaken with the purpose of providing up-to-date information on fertility levels, determinants of fertility, fertility preferences, family planning, infant and child mortality, reproductive health and child health, including breastfeeding, and knowledge of RTIs/STDs and HIV/AIDS. The information is intended to assist policy makers and programme managers in planning, designing, managing and evaluating programmes. It is also meant to improve birth spacing/family planning services in the country.
