Recent decades have seen a push for gender parity in education in low resource countries. Attention is shifting to how school environments hinder the achievement of gender equality. One effort, primarily led by the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, includes a focus on the needs of menstruating girls.
This Toolkit has been developed for staff of Ministries of education and education departments to increase their awareness on HIV and AIDS and reinforce their commitments in preventive education. The Advocacy Toolkit provides the basic information on HIV and AIDS, identifies the role of Education in HIV prevention and gives recommendations on preventive education including monitoring and evaluation of education programmes.
Promoting health and a healthy lifestyle among children and youth is a national priority for all Eastern European and Central Asian countries, and is reflected in their country policies. Schools have an important role to play in health promotion, by preparing children, adolescents and youth for a healthy and safe adulthood. This review of policies and practices provides a brief account of the achievements to date in prevention education (with special focus on drug use prevention), and outlines the challenges still to be addressed.

This report aims to understand sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs and related policies for three selected vulnerable groups - Roma (men and women), internally displaced people (IDPs) and adolescents - in eight Eastern European and Central Asian countries. The purpose of the study is to contribute to a policy dialogue on focusing national programs on the SRH needs of vulnerable groups.
The subject of the following paper is the examination of selected documents from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan with a focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV and AIDS. This document describes recent patterns and trends in the HIV epidemic in eastern Europe. AIDS programme managers and epidemiologists of 23 countries were contacted and requested to provide national HIV surveillance data. Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS/World Health Organisation country fact sheets were reviewed and analysed, and this information was supplemented with published HIV prevalence and sexually transmitted disease case reporting information, unpublished travel reports and expert evaluations.
