The MKA clubs dynamic school and community extra curricular setting aims to invigorate HIV and AIDS prevention and mitigation efforts among people of all ages, particularly the youth. Clubs members include out-of-school youth, orphans and children with HIV and AIDS, as mandated in their by-laws, stimulating community-wide dialogue about youth development and HIV. The vocational training (VT) sector has an important role to play in HIV/AIDS prevention and in impact mitigation.The young adults this sector works with not only represent the human capital that their country's future economic growth depends upon, but also the age group most at risk of HIV/AIDS infection.The approach described in this report has the objective of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS in the VT system in Botswana, in order to help prevent further infections among teachers and learners.
The original project was designed to examine the resonances between gender as it constructed in the occupational setting and the HIV response of young people. Data were generated through a large scale national survey of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) apprentices in the occupational streams of hairdressing, automotive, and commercial cookery. A total of 4283 apprentices from 52 colleges across all states and territories of Australia completed the survey. This report presents some main indices on HIV-related issues drawn from this database.
