  1. Strengthening national responses to HIV and adolescents in emergency situations: lessons learned from Côte d'Ivoire and Haiti

    many years, and a growing number of organizations are including a focus on young people, HIV/ASRH and humanitarian settings into their work. Despite this, however, there is on‐going concern that young people in general, and adolescents in particular (10-19 years) do not receive sufficient ttention in humanitarian settings, and that this has both important immediate implications for their health during the emergencies, and also much longer-term implications for them, their families and their communities.   3. Impact of school-based HIV prevention program in post-conflict Liberia

    This paper presents findings of a feasibility study to adapt and evaluate the impact of an evidence-based HIV prevention intervention on sexual risk behaviors of in-school 6th grade youth in post-conflict Liberia (n = 812). The study used an attention-matched, group randomized controlled trial. Four matched pairs of elementary/middle schools in Monrovia, Liberia, were randomly assigned to either an adapted eight-module HIV prevention or a general health curriculum. Three- and nine-month impacts of the intervention on sexual risk behaviors and on mediating variables are presented. …

    Documento sobre el marco legal que garantiza los derechos de salud sexual y reproductiva y VIH/sida de los jóvenes en Costa Rica. Se analizan las regulaciones legales sobre juventud, VIH/sida y migración. En base a este análisis se detectan problemas como la ausencia de una política de género, o una perspectiva de derechos humanos en la legislación, además de la situación de precariedad de la población migrante en ese país.

  7. Breaking through the clouds : a Participatory Action Research (PAR) Project with migrant children and youth along the borders of China, Myanmar and Thailand

    A report on the Participatory Action Research (PAR) project implemented by Save the Children's Southeast & East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office during April 1999 to March 2001 with funding from the Department of International Development (UK). The PAR project is a new approach to learning, documenting and developing potential for change. The participants of PAR project strongly recommend this approach as an effective way to address sensitive issues to children and youth in vulnerable situations.

  8. HIV and AIDS: information and activity book for mentors

    This booklet is an example of life skills based education materials used in emergency situations, especially for children and young people who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and rape. While the materials are intended for an audience aged 10 and above, the core content of the material is universally applicable and the materials can be adapted to a particular situation.   9. Tri-Country HIV/AIDS and Refugees Workshop: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda

    A tri-country HIV/AIDS and Refugees workshop was organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 10-13 December 2002. The objectives of the workshop were to improve the quality and to standardise the various HIV/AIDS programs implemented in the refugee camps in the three countries as well as to plan for 2003. Representatives from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), UNICEF and the Ugandan government, all of whom work in the refugee camps, participated in the 4-day event. …

  10. HIV/AIDS Education for Refugee Youth: the window of hope

    This paper has been written to meet the need for guidance, expressed by our field colleagues in Africa, on how to introduce and implement HIV/AIDS education in our refugee programmes targeting youth. It is addressed to humanitarian workers in refugee settings, especially UNHCR Community Service Officers, education personnel and the staff of implementing partners working on education related issues. We hope that it will provide you with some ideas and practical inputs on how you can approach the issue of HIV/AIDS in formal and non-formal refugee education programmes.
