  2. Assessment of the psychometric properties of HIV knowledge items across five countries

HIV knowledge is commonly measured in HIV prevention research and program evaluations, but rigorous measurement standards are not always applied. Using item response theory methods, we examined the psychometric functioning of five commonly used HIV knowledge questions in five countries with varying HIV prevalence. We evaluated the internal consistency and measurement invariance of the items. The items performed poorly in all samples and the scale as a whole did not perform equally across samples. …

  3. HIV and human rights: A mapping of donor priorities and trends in southern Africa

Donors at every level are retreating on funding commitments to HIV, and organizations working at the intersection of AIDS and rights are facing overall funding challenges. This briefing paper reports the findings of a 2012 study on HIV and human rights donor trends in Southern Africa, commissioned by the Open Society Foundations. It identifies opportunities to leverage donor support for HIV and human rights organizations, and for donor collaboration that can support them in the current funding environment.

To carry this out, a National Action Plan on HIV and AIDS 2006- 2008 was developed through a multisectoral participative consultation. …

  5. Will We End the HIV Epidemic? The Impact of HIV Treatment on HIV Prevention and Implications for the 2010 Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria

This advocacy piece from the International AIDS Society argues that without sufficient treatment coverage, investments in HIV treatment and prevention will have only limited impact. Therefore, maximising coverage is the most sustainable response. By limiting new infections in the next five years, treatment costs that would otherwise continue to accrue for decades can be avoided. The author uses mathematical models to show that the potential of HIV treatment as prevention is high. …

  8. The gender guide for health communication programs

A tool designed to encourage the incorporation of gender-based roles and responsibilities in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health communication programmes. The guide provides keys questions to help programme managers determine how gender roles for both women and men, may impede access to health information, restrict use of health services, or limit beneficial health outcomes. By identifying this information, health communication programmes can encourage individuals and communities to pay attention to resolving gender inequities.

  9. InfoDev : facilitating communications in response to HIV/AIDS in South-East Asia : UNAIDS case study

Over the last decade developed countries have experienced a transformation in the scope and reach of information technologies and infrastructures. However, this digital revolution has been slow to materialize in developing countries, further marginalizing them and creating a digital divide. Innovative ways must be explored to leverage these new technologies for a range of development opportunities in the HIV/AIDS field from distance learning to bringing basic HIV/AIDS prevention information to patients and practitioners. …
