Utilizing Title IX, which guarantees the rights of pregnant/mothering students to an education equal to her peers, as an analytical lens, the author specifically identifies how absences in knowledge, research, and practice about the education of pregnant/mothering students are constructed.   2. Predictors of knowledge about HIV/AIDS among young people: Lessons from Botswana

    This study sought to identify factors that can predict knowledge about HIV/AIDS among adolescents in Botswana. The data were collected through a self administered questionnaire from a sample of 1294 students from schools around the capital city of Botswana, Gaborone. The research instrument consisted of 76 items that solicited information on background characteristics of respondents, indicators of family cohesiveness and bonding of children with their parents, indicators of personal adjustment, evidence of sex life, and knowledge about HIV/AIDS. …

  3. WHO guidelines on preventing early pregnancy and poor reproductive outcomes among adolescents in developing countries

    These guidelines provide recommendations on action and research for a) preventing early pregnancy: by preventing marriage before 18 years of age; by increasing knowledge and understanding of the importance of pregnancy prevention; by increasing the use of contraception; and by preventing coerced sex; and b) preventing poor reproductive outcomes: by reducing unsafe abortions; and by increasing the use of skilled antenatal, childbirth and postnatal care. …

  4. Nepal: support communication to enhance young mothers' reproductive health

    This study was undertaken as part of a reproductive health project implemented by the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and the Center for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), sought to improve social norms that leave young women vulnerable to health risks related to early marriage and childbearing and limited access to reproductive health services. It was found that communication-based support to mothersÆ groups and newly formed youth communication groups improved reproductive health knowledge and behavior among young married women in Nepal.

  6. Mothers' influence on teen sex : connections that promote postponing sexual intercourse

    The study focuses on mother-teen relationships as they affect behaviour among teens who are not yet sexually active. The report looks at several questions such as: Do mothers know whether their teens have had sex?; Do mothers talk to their teens about sex and birth control?; Mothers talk, teen's perceptions: what matters?; What effect do closeness and connectedness have on teen sex?; What else about mothers make a difference for sexual initiation.
