  8. Masculinities and condom use patterns among young rural South Africa men: a cross-sectional baseline survey

    Notions of ideal manhood in South Africa are potentially prescriptive of male sexuality thus accounting for the behaviors which may lead to men being at greater HIV risk. We tested the hypothesis that gender and relationship constructs are associated with condom use among young men living in rural South Africa. 1219 men aged 15–26 years completed a cross-sectional baseline survey from an IsiXhosa questionnaire asking about sexual behaviour and relationships. …

  10. Perspectives on intimate partner violence in Swaziland amongst 18–29-year-old men undergoing medical circumcision

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) is perceived as a major contributor to HIV transmission in Swaziland. This exploratory study aimed to develop a culturally-specific understanding of men's perspectives of IPV. Focus group methods were used to gather information from 45 young urban Swazi men who had undergone medical male circumcision. A thematic analysis was conducted focussing on the manifestations of IPV and socio-cultural and economic factors which underpin, circumstances which trigger and social responses to IPV. …

    Great numbers of men report experiencing violence as children and these experiences have significant lifelong effects, according to the new analysis of the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES) dataset included in this report. Adult men who were victims or witnesses of domestic violence as children, for instance, likely come to accept violence as a conflict resolving tactic not only in intimate partnerships but also in their wider lives. …

  13. Invisible difference in space: the role of different spaces in homophobic bullying in schools

    This small-scale piece of research was undertaken to examine, retrospectively, the experiences of 10 men, ages 27 through 53, in terms of what constitutes and influences homophobic bullying in the private and state school contexts in the United Kingdom. Using standpoint epistemology and a life histories method, the author investigates what is meant by homophobia and homophobic bullying; tries to identify why respondents think the bullying they suffered was homophobic in nature; and identifies and develops an understanding of the role different spaces play within school. …

    This report summarizes multi-country findings from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES), a comprehensive household questionnaire on men's attitudes and practices - along with women's opinions and reports of men's practices - on a wide variety of topics related to gender equality. From 2009 to 2010, household surveys were administered to more than 8,000 men and 3,500 women ages 18 to 59 in Brazil, Chile, Croatia, India, Mexico and Rwanda. …

  15. La masculinidad desde la perspectiva de los hombres de Lima Metropolitana - Proyecto MACHO

    Se realizó un trabajo cualitativo fenomenológico, con la finalidad de determinar la percepción de Masculinidad desde la perspectiva de los hombres de Lima Metropolitana. Para ello se realizaron grupos focales y entrevistas en profundidad, realizándose un total de 6 grupos focales y 10 entrevistas en profundidad semi-estructuradas, considerando la selección de los participantes. Las grabaciones de los grupos focales y las entrevistas, se transcribieron a Word, y se realizó un análisis cualitativo con codificación a posteriori y construcción de nodos. …
