(June 2014) Around 270,000 people were living with HIV in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as of the end of 2012, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS). This translates to an overall HIV prevalence of 0.1 percent among adults ages 15 to 49, one of the lowest rates in the world. But other statistics tell a different story. Between 2001 and 2012, the number of new infections in MENA grew by 52 percent—the most rapid increase in HIV among world regions. …

An information campaign that provided Kenyan teenagers in randomly selected schools with the information that HIV prevalence was much higher among adult men and their partners than among teenage boys led to a 65% decrease in the incidence of pregnancies by adult partners among teenage girls in the treatment group relative to the comparison. This suggests a large reduction in the incidence of unprotected cross-generational sex. The information campaign did not increase pregnancies among teenage couples. …

This report grows out of the shared belief that there must be a response to the impeding HIV crisis confronting women and girls in Malaysia. The increasingly feminised nature of the HIV epidemic in the country has been linked to issues affecting women's ability to control and decide issues relating to sex. Whether as injecting drug users, housewives, migrant workers, professionals, refugees or sex workers, women and girls experience HIV and AIDS differently compared to men and boys. Their risks and vulnerabilities to HIV require a gendered response. …
