This compendium has profiled and analysed 11 case studies on integrated service delivery in the context of EMTCT from 9 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. All of the examples demonstrate a general trend towards the implementation of integrated service delivery models supported by policy frameworks adopted in country and by service organizations at the facility level. These promising practices are by no means exhaustive or geographically representative. They do, however, contain valuable and practical vignettes of integrated service delivery in countries with generalized HIV epidemics. …
As the field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) evolves, further discussion and documentation of national policy and aspects of its implementation is needed to ensure effectiveness of interventions. Further research is required to foster beneficial shifts in policy advocacy, including resource allocation, and in the prioritization of adolescent programs in health and education systems, in communities and in workplaces. Adolescents are exposed to diverse interventions across all the countries under discussion; however there exist obstacles to realization of ASRH goals. …
Background: Epidemiological data from South Africa demonstrate that risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in males increases dramatically after adolescence. Targeting adolescent HIV-negative males may be an efficient and cost-effective means of maximising the established HIV prevention benefits of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) in high HIV prevalence–, low circumcision practice–settings. This toolkit was designed to be used by implementors such as experienced programme staff from NGOs, government offices or private industries who want to implement an SRH project for 10-14 year olds enrolled in primary school. The project activities within the toolkit rely on the implementor creating a strong partnership with local schools and community leaders. The toolkit presents several overlapping approaches to increase young adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health knowledge and improve their sexual behaviours.

O presente relatório apresenta os resultados da pesquisa etnográfica realizada nos distritos de Ribáuè, Mossuril, Nhamatanda e Zavala sobre as práticas culturais e comunitárias de promoção de Saúde Sexual e Reprodutiva. A pesquisa adoptou uma abordagem etnográfica e qualitativa centrada na abordagem sociocultural. A recolha de dados foi feita através da realização de entrevistas individuais, grupos de discussão focal e observação directa estruturada, abarcando as províncias de Nampula, Sofala e Inhambane.

This paper focuses on sexual debut among out-of-school youth in Masaka District, Uganda; factors influencing its timing; and assistance young people feel they need to delay sexual initiation. Data were drawn from a needs assessment using applied anthropological techniques with young people ages 13-19 years. Parents, guardians, and community leaders were also consulted. All participants felt that young people begin their sexual lives too early. Young men feel under pressure from friends and older men to prove their masculinity. …
