  1. AIDS at 35: a midlife crisis

AIDS was first publicly reported on 5 June 1981 in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) of the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Doctors in New York and San Francisco were seeing clusters of previously extremely rare diseases such as Pneumocystis carinii, and Kaposi’s sarcoma. These infections manifested in exceptionally serious forms, initially, within a narrowly defined risk group — young, homosexual men, and led to death within a short period. …

  2. Opportunity in crisis: preventing HIV from early adolescence to young adulthood

This newly released report, published by UNICEF with UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFPA, ILO, WHO and the World Bank, describes the state of the epidemic in young people, the evidence for effective responses that address behavioural, social and structural challenges and prevent new HIV infections in young people. Country-specific data is shared.

  6. ICMH Report: Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs and Practices Survey

The survey grew out of a concern about the impact of rapid social change on life and health in Albania and in particular its possible consequences for HIV/AIDS. The survey used the Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs and Practices (KABP) approach developed by Dr Manuel Carballo and colleagues in the WHO Global Programme on AIDS in 1988. Since that time KABP surveys have gone on to be used in a variety of forms in many parts of the world, and have been especially applied to health and health-related behavior

  7. Characterizing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa: time for strategic action

Despite a fair amount of progress on understanding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemiology globally, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is the only region where knowledge of the epidemic continues to be very limited, and subject to much controversy. This report addresses this dearth of strategic information on HIV infections in MENA through a joint effort of the World Bank, the MENA Regional Support Team (RST) of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organization (WHO). …
