Teenage pregnancy in the Dominican Republic is a complex problem and of high concern to the national agenda. Available data indicate that 22% of women between 12-19 years have been pregnant. This rate is 34% higher than the average for Latin America and the Caribbean. Teenage pregnancy is concentrated in specific areas of the country – the southern provinces and central Cibao - as well as among poorer people. The fact that the indicator (adolescent fertility rate) has shown little variation in the last three decades makes the picture complex. …

This study examined the attendance patterns by region of schools which participated in School Feeding Programmes (SFPs) in poor, remote rural areas of Jamaica and determined wether there was a significant difference in attendance over a 10 year period between children who took different lunch types. The study revealed peaks and troughs in the average annual attendance by region, but found no significant difference in attendance by lunch type. …

La presente investigación busca analizar cómo se conforma la pobreza y vulnerabilidad en las comunidades TLGBI a partir de los procesos de exclusión y discriminación, construidos desde la heteronormatividad, dentro de la elaboración e implementación de las políticas públicas de salud en Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Para ello, la primera interrogante gira en torno a cómo los sistemas de salud pública en los países estudiados han implementado el componente de orientación sexual y/o identidad de género en su normativa y ejecución desde el año 2000 hasta la actualidad.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic disproportionately afflicts regions of the world that have minimal access to formal schooling and low literacy rates. Health educational interventions are difficult to evaluate efficiently in these settings because standard approaches such as written questionnaires cannot easily be employed. Este trabajo refleja la experiencia llevada a cabo durante el año 2002 por la Asociación Civil Intercambios, con población adolescente de la zona del partido de Avellaneda donde se desarrolla un programa de reducción de daños desde 1999. Tuvo como objetivo desarrollar actividades de prevención y capacitación acerca del VIH y otras infecciones de transmisión sexual, así como de prevención de los problemas asociados con el uso de drogas. A partir del trabajo inicial de recolección de información se realizaron 66 talleres preventivos, y 5 actividades comunitarias de prevención. …

The 2002-2006 National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan is a follow-up to the previous 1997-2001 Medium Term Plan, and takes into account the expanded response to HIV/AIDS in the region as well as the worsening epidemic in Jamaica. It has also recognized that HIV/AIDS is not only a health issue, but also a major developmental problem. The plan is based on the analysis of the national HIV/AIDS situation, risk behaviour and factors contributing to vulnerability to the infection. …
