  3. Can any teacher teach sexuality and HIV/AIDS? Perspectives of South African Life Orientation teachers

    In this paper we explore the perceived desirable characteristics of South African Life Orientation teachers for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. We also investigate the extent to which these characteristics can be understood as parts of a role script for teaching HIV/AIDS and sexuality. Data were collected from teachers who taught Grade Eight and Grade Nine students in South African public high schools. The teachers particularly emphasised the importance of personality and life experience as important characteristics for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. …

  4. HIV/AIDS researchers interaction with schoolteachers: A key to combat AIDS among Brazilian adolescents

    Considering the fact that information on HIV/AIDS is a strategy for disease control, this project was planned to provide comprehensive information about HIV infection and AIDS to schoolteachers and their students. Previous analysis of adolescent students' knowledge of HIV/AIDS showed that they still have doubts about transmission, diagnosis, and treatment.   5. Challenges facing headteachers in implementation of AIDS education in secondary school curriculum in Kenya: a case study of Busia, Bunyala and Samia districts

    The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges facing headteachers in the implementation of AIDS education in secondary school curriculum in Busia, Bunyala and Samia Districts and find out how they were coping. Specifically, it focused on challenges in induction of teachers, provision of teaching and learning materials, supervision and evaluation of the teaching of AIDS education.     In 2002, the AFT launched its first Africa HIV/AIDS project with the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA). This toolkit contains contains a series of 12 sessions looking a such topics as: HIV transmission; living with AIDS; creating a code of conduct for teachers; gender, power and HIV and AIDS; HIV and AIDS and culture and the problem of stigmatisation in Africa.

    This handbook for students is the last in a series of three documents designed for educational planners, teachers and students on school health education and the prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. It includes some fifty-three student learning activities on prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The activities are divided into four units: 1) basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and STDs; 2) abstinence and postponement of first sexual contact; 3) practicing safer sex; and 4) counselling and support.
