Few studies have examined the different dimensions of women's empowerment and contraceptive use in African countries. Data for this study came from the latest round of Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 2006 and 2008 in Namibia, Zambia, Ghana and Uganda. Responses from married or cohabiting women ages 15–49 were analyzed for six dimensions of empowerment and the current use of female-only methods or couple methods. Bivariate and multivariate multinomial regressions were used to identify associations between the empowerment dimensions and method use. …

The report summarizes proceedings of a meeting among international reproductive health community about power and its impact on reproductive and sexual health. Current challenges, programme and policy interventions, research gaps, and recommendations for action are presented in the report. The meeting was jointly organized by Population Council and USAID's Interagency Gender Working Group's Men and Reproductive Health Subcommittee.
This issue of Population Bulletin reviews the evolution of national population policies, particularly following the historic 1994 Cairo conference. It describes the new focus on improving reproductive health and women's rights and how governments have tried to incorporate this new approach in their policies and programs. The Bulletin also looks at possible new directions for population policies.
