This document is designed to bring attention to the dynamics of the school community and infer policy implications to support that community. The UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education and School Health, under the direction of the Secretariat at UNESCO, conducted a research project that consisted of a literature review, a large-scale global teacher organization survey, and focus group discussions in multiple regions of the world. For example it not only reduces the stock of human capital but also the capacity to maintain the required turnover of many sought after skills and trainining like engineers, doctors, teachers, artisans and others. In the educational sphere, it leads to among other things a decrease in potential clientele for education, resources and even donor support. Increasingly, education is considered as effective tool to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic. However the impact of HIV/AIDS on education, especially on the higher education sector, has not yet been well-documented. Although some case studies have recently been undertaken in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean, there is little known about the situation in West Africa. The UNESCO review of Universities Responses to HIV/AIDS aims to fill some of this knowledge gap, through this study in Burkina Faso. …
