Serhiy Bubka

Mr. Serhiy Bubka, UNESCO Champion for Sport

The legendary pole-vaulter Serhiy Bubka was designated UNESCO Champion for Sport in November 2003. This title was bestowed upon him in recognition of his role in the promotion of peace and tolerance through sport and the Olympic spirit.

Known as the "Tsar of the Perch", Serhiy Bubka has broken thirty-five world records during his career. Six-time World Champion (1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997), European Champion (1986) and Olympic Champion (1988), he was named Hero of Ukraine in February 2001, the highest honorary title which can be awarded by the Ukrainian government.

In his capacity as a UNESCO Champion for Sport, he contributed to the success of the European Youth Forum held in August 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden. More than 100 youth and eminent athletes from 30 European countries attended the Forum.
