Teachers and students can use this guide to address and prevent violence. School violence is an immensely complex issue and thus requires numerous factors to be addressed. Such factors include the need for student participation; a holistic approach involving parents, educators and the community; linking of policy, legislation and practice; the development of indicators on violence; and cultural sensitivity in addressing concepts such as the universality of human rights as part of a human rights-based approach. …
The first cohort of trainee teachers who participated in the Teacher Training College (TTC) programme finished in August 2009. Theatre for a Change (TfaC) contracted independent consultants to carry out an impact assessment on the TTC programme to identify its strengths and weaknesses. TfaC will use this impact assessment to inform the programme’s development. This report assesses the programme’s impact by comparing the results of the baseline survey, conducted at the beginning of the programme in October 2008, with the results of the endline survey, conducted in August 2009. …
This study investigated homophobic victimization, teacher support, and school commitment in Brazilian schools. Participants were 339 students, ages 11 to 18, in two public schools in Brazil. Data were obtained using the Brazil Preventing School Harassment Survey. Structural equation modeling revealed that both homophobic and nonhomophobic victimization were negatively related to school commitment but that homophobic victimization was a stronger predictor. Results supported the hypothesis that supportive teachers can moderate the relationship between victimization and school commitment. …

Zimbabwe introduced a nation-wide program to teach AIDS education in 1994. This paper evaluates changes in student teachers' level of knowledge about transmission, symptoms and prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS; their attitude towards persons living with AIDS; and their sensitivity to the impact of the epidemic and to discussing and teaching about these issues. There was an increase in knowledge of HIV prevention and in teachers' ability to discuss reproductive health and sexual issues. …
