First FESA-UNESCO International Conference on Culture of Peace

On 11 September 2015, the Eduardo dos Santos Foundation (FESA) held in collaboration with UNESCO an International Conference on the Culture of Peace in Soyo (Angola).

Among the participants were the Minister of Culture, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola, the Secretary of State for Human Rights and the Secretary of State for the Family and the Advancement of Women , as well as representatives of the Network of Foundations and Research Institutions for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace in Africa, the Youth Network for the Culture of Peace in Africa, civil society, and religious and traditional organizations.

Her Excellency Mrs Rosa da Cruz e Silva, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Angola, opened the conference by reaffirming the importance of educating young people in a spirit of harmony through new technologies and social networks to promote peace and non-violence. The Minister also stressed the important role that UNESCO and the various United Nations agencies play in conflict prevention. "The culture of peace we are accomplishing here with this conference is non-negotiable, irreversible and must be entirely our food, our life and our salvation," she added.

The Head of UNESCO's Libreville Office, Mr. Enzo Fazzino, then briefly introduced the concept of Culture of Peace and Development of the Pan-African Movement for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace, milestones since the birth of this concept on African soil in 1989, in Yamoussoukro in Côte d'Ivoire until today.

The themes discussed in the ensuing discussions covered the eight areas of action of the United Nations Culture of Peace Program, including education, citizenship and democracy, conflict prevention and resolution, media, especially cultural and social media, culture, arts and cultural industries, history, memory and cultural practices, human rights, gender equality, interreligious dialogue and the significant role played by the youth.

His Excellency Manuel Augusto, Secretary of State for External Relations of the Republic of Angola, who on behalf of his Government announced the holding of the Pan-African Forum on the Culture of Peace in 2016 Africa «Biennale of Luanda», in collaboration with UNESCO and the African Union, closed the Conference.
